I find this odd since any wear on this linkage will nullify much of the benefit of a new shifter console, I'm hearing conflicting information from local shops and wanted to check with you folks to see if your console had both linkages.

Randy...looks like the laser aligner you used for the "crest to valve stem" was out of calibration!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Darn things didn't help the driving experience a bit.
For me it has been 3 months since I last drove my car and with the weather at -10 today there is no hope of driving in the very near future.
So I am getting bad 911 withdrawal symptoms, and have been doing anything to work on the car whilst I am waiting, and this brings me on to mods, so how about detailing what mods you have done, what have been the best and the worst and what are you planning in the future.
For me current mods on my 40th:
Victor Innsbruck black wheels - I think they are worth it for the look, cant tell any performance difference but they were a little lighter.
Smoked side lights
Gillette shaving cap in airbox - by far the best sound mod for the $
Went to a Schnell intake from above - I cant tell any difference from the shaving cap in terms of sound and no perceivable performance enhancement, the only thing lighter is my wallet. Thinking of going back to the std airbox and cap as I dont really like the gaudy orange hose. Waste of money.
Muffler PSE bypass great sound, no droning and only $200 at a local muffler shop.
Mods Im currently doing for spring:
Red powdercoated calipers rebuild and new seals
New turbo motor mounts, see how they go and maybe make my own semi solids in the summer and try those
Hardwiring a Ipod jack from Becker to the CDR23
Mods for the future:
997 shifter, I think mine is ok, dont want a super short one some maybe the 997 is the best compromise
Maybe suspension, maybe a cat bypass.$$$$$, maybe trade it for a 996TT
The best for me have been the Fister sport mufflers and the new sound system. I'm also quite fond of the heated seats and the homelink rearview mirror that I added.
As for "worst" mods, I can't think of one yet. I suppose the worst one would be the replacement of my "parking lights" inside the headlight assembly with LED lights. They don't look bad, but they don't look as good as I thought. I'm thinking of going back to regular bulbs.
the "worst mod" I had on my 40th was made by the PO... which was a = PORSCHE = Decal on the doors. He had also added Carbon fiber to the mirrors. Both of these were removed.
There was also a K&N intake. It sounded GREAT, but I think it didn't do much other than make me clean the MAF, incessantly, then replace it with the stock OEM unit.
So in a sense, all of my MODs have been to return to stock.
My favorite additions to my car have been the coilovers and wheels. The ride height adjustment and wheels made into a totally different car.
Most of my mods have been pretty well planned and thought out, but the one thing I wasn't super happy with was the muffler bypass pipes. They sounded incredible, but the drone was mind-numbing.
Best: LN 3.8 rebore with nikasil plating and forged pistons. The car absolutley rips.... 300 TQ. / 330 HP to rear wheels.
H&R coilovers were a great upgrade as well. Corner speed and grip have improved dramatically with the lowered ride height, corner balance and aggressive alignment.
Worst: Tequip roll bar. The bar will not allow a tall driver to push seat back or recline. What a waste of time and money. Going to buy the new GMG bar instead.
Some good information here already...First I'll give my list and then ask some questions:
Best: EVOMS intake-nice sound, small performance improvement after 4k rpm
Best/Worst: KW coilovers. Awesome on the track, but brutal on terrible Boston streets
Questions:
Hardback, was the 3.8 rebore in the $18k range I see quoted occasionally?
Ivan, are the Euro GT3 seats comfortable enough for a daily driver?
Best mod: painted rear bumperettes (for pre-2002 models).
2nd best mod: OBC with stalk (again, only applies to pre-2002 models).
3rd best mod: garage door opener switch in overhead light console.
Currently...
Fister D's
Pioneer AVIC 930bt + new amp + new speakers + new sub
Custom PORSCHE Bezel around head unit
Guards Red air vents and other cabin accents
Ashtray delete in aluminum
Amberectomy
Up next...
Steel gauge rings (in my garage but have not put them on yet...)
Sport pedals
Poly Engine Mounts
997 SSK
Aftermarket Lumbar Support Retrofit
Out of all my mods, these were the ones that were noticeable 100% of the time in every driving situation, environment, and the most practical and enjoyable in a daily driver setting.
Of course my CO's, Tires, Wheels, and engine mods help the driving "excitement" but not necessarily adds a dramatic impact to the "experience" on a daily basis.
Uber, no not even close. I have a really good indy in my area who performed the rebuild, TuneRS. The process took 1 month to plan and negotiate then another 3 months till completion. The motor has about 8,000 miles on now and i'd bet it makes more power than the first dyno session showed with only 100 miles. The list of parts replaced was very extensive. I also added components such as 997 water pump, LN deep sump, AOS, triple row XXX, ARP rod bolts, billet tensioner etc. The cost was 13K and that inlcuded replacing one of the heads with a preowned unit. If you or anyone else is interested in the parts list shoot me a PM.
A year after installaion, the single mass flywheel and sport clutch package mod is my favorite. It's not for everybody, but the change really wakes up this motor. A suspension rebuilt using shorter springs is next, and maybe turbo mounts.
Worst: Installing clear turn signal lenses. Darn things didn't help the driving experience a bit. Car actually felt a little slower. I dumped them to some sucker on E-bay.
Best: LN pistons really changed the way it drives. Amazing how 40 ft/lbs transforms these engines!
Best Mod -- New Motor Mounts, made an unbelievable difference
2nd Best Mod -- PSE/Gundo Hack, finally made the car sound like it had a pair
Worst...The dowel rod I use to prop open the engine because I can NEVER remember to order the rear strut when I'm placing random or various parts orders.
Mine have always been inline with what the car needs/wants: tires, clutch, RMS, suspension.
Best mods - 2-Din Pioneer head, sport pedals
Upcoming - FisterD once Darin gets stock
I know, but I order enough stuff I'm always thinking I'll just add it to the next order...and then NEVER remember until the new box from Pelican or Suncoast arrives, and I kick myself. Looks like she's going in for a new clutch soon anyway, so I may just buy it from the dealer if I can remember to ask
(and if they don't want a ridiculous amount for it).

Try raising the spoiler, then opening the hood. So far, that's worked for me.
There's a really nice feature on Pelican site called "Project List", which allows you to save any parts for a future order in case you're browsing the site but don't plan on placing an order righ away. It comes in handy for these situations.
Best:
New motor mounts (well, not a mod i guess)
997 shifter
painted bumperettes
New simple JVC head unit
CD holder out- extra cubby in
Worst:
Removing the clutch pedal spring helper (it's back in)!
Best - Fister D's, I never get tired of the sound
2nd Best - iPod touch integration
Others -
Aluminum gauge rings
Mod to allow raising/lowering of Cab top while moving.
Swapped out pumpkins
Mod to make side markers blink with turn signals
A set of winter wheels/tires (Thanks for the link, Ivangene)
Silverstar lamps (not ultras, which I think are too bright)
Magnetic Oil plug (LNE)
Spin-On Oil Filter adapter (LNE)
X51 Oil Pan
Low Temp Thermostat
a couple of 3-letter items
Worst -
Paint modification by a 20 foot aluminum ladder
Bumper modification by a lawn chair (one of us was doing 80 mph)
Did you get both coupler/linkages from the SSK? I'm trying to determine if a new SSK or just the regular 997 shifter console should come with couplers/linkages for both shift rods.
TIA
Cat bypass pipes. Love the sound, and feels like the car breathes much better on the freeway, but sweet suffering christ, the fumes make it impossible to drive with the windows down. I'm throwing the cats back on as soon as my clamps arrive from Pelican Parts.
Also changed out my K&N snorkel intake for a 997 3.8 box with a K&N drop in filter. K&N snorkel "cold air" filter was a bit too noisy for me, and now I'm getting used to hearing the sound of the engine again, instead of the sound of the intake.
Mods I've done that I'm happy with:
-Fabspeed Exhaust
-GT3 console delete
-GT3 steering wheel
-Alcantara shift boot and updated shift ****
-997 3.8 air box (just looks better, and easier to clean)
-19" wheels
-H&R Coilovers
-997 front end conversion
-997 style mirrors
-Ducktail engine lid
Best mod on my C2 was removing the clutch booster spring. It was easy and didn't cost anything and made the car much more enjoyable to drive all the time especially in stop and go heavy traffic.

Other mods I've liked are the PSE, heavier rear sway bar, grey marker lights, 911 rear emblem
Best mod's:
PSE - love the sound and never turn it off (should have just gone for Fister D's but was worried about leaving home in the early hours which is the only time I close the valves)
2010 GT3 Shifter
Painted brake calipers red
Replaced pumpkins with clear side lights
Worst mod's - none so far.
Took me a while to sort out but the Super Charger in place from TPC is frankly quite awesome. 100+HP is 'noticeable'.
Coil-Overs, make the car super tight, but are a bit bone-jarring.
TPC sway bars and stage 4 suspension are tunable and make the car handle more-so, on rails.
Fister-D exhaust - Sweet!
19 inch wheels also increased handling/tightness.
Next up, the iPad Mini integration for better sound and functionality. Link
here.
There are two linkages at the bottom of the shifter console as shown in the attached image of the shifter bottom view, one linkage on each side, the pre-owned shifter console I got did not have the one connecting to the ball at the bottom of the shift arm and the passenger side shift rod, which looks like the one in the close-up image.
I find this odd since any wear on this linkage will nullify much of the benefit of a new shifter console, I'm hearing conflicting information from local shops and wanted to check with you folks to see if your console had both linkages.
best mods:
PSS9 and H&R sway bars - best mod by far.
RS motor mounts - minimal vibration issues - great throttle response.
Centre console delete - all the room i need now.;
GBox 2nd gear detent - finally feels like the gear is landing properly.
worst mods:
B&M SSK - couldn't wait to get rid of it. Back to stock for now.
Clutch helper spring removal - actually the spring broke but I left it for a while and the action was horrible.
Cheap and cheerful mods (no performance diff but cost was next to nil):
GT3 brake cooling ducts - I got these for $10 somewhere.
orange cap mod - free
de-badge rear lid - free - the anti hurdigurdi look
Great mod that came with a downside:
AASCO lightweight flywheel - SACHS sport clutch and spring centred clutch disc.
The clutch action is light and intuitive - the throttle response is immediate - the drivetrain as tractable as ever....but my gearbox rattles and gnashes constantly. I like everything about it except the noise.
I hate to bring back an old thread but was wondering more about this. Did you just buy the 3.8 kit from them? Anything else need to be done while in there? Also how many hours of labor did it take?
Thanks!
This was a fun thread to re-read. Each rebuild is different depending on builder and customer's goals/budget. My experience was enjoyable once we came up with a plan and I got over the expense part. I had many discussions with my indy prior to sending the cases to LN Engineering. I negotiated labor hours and part costs but in order to receive a warranty on the completed rebuild I bought all parts through my mechanic. If you want some more details on the build send me a PM and I'll forward an abbreviated part list and extras "while we were in there" list. The engine has 26,000 miles on it now and I'm very pleased with bump in power/torque.
Randy...looks like the laser aligner you used for the "crest to valve stem" was out of calibration! (See "Good day on the 996 forum") thread.....BTW my RR is out, too

OR
You can roll up a small hand towel and stuf it back there but it won't have the easy adjustments of an inflatable. I've done both before.
Best mods were the T96 steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and shirt shift kit. Worst mod thinking I should actually keep the 4-post "trans-am" steering wheel for the future.
Best mods in order:
FisterD mufflers
5% tints all around
X74 suspension
2010 GT3 shifter
RSS engine mounts
FF1 transmission insert
Orange cap
Worst mods:
none. I don't do mods just for sake of "modding"
Best mods:
Tint 32% all the way around (legal in NC)
Aluminum pedals
K&N Filter & airbox mod
HRE P40 Monoblok Wheels 19"
Hankook Tires
Sound System
Upper and lower rear wings
Worse: none so far.
This is interesting. My butt must've gotten very desensitized coming from a boosted car. I didn't really notice anything dramatic with a pulley or by having the rear spoiler in a semi-schwing state.
The underdrive pulley isn't a massive - or even BIG difference - but when compared to other mods solely by price, the pulley and the shims were by far the best money I spent.
The steering wheel was purchased from DCT Motorsports. If you have a 4-post wheel the interior will be transformed. The wheel padding is thicker and mine was ordered in the matching Metropol blue interior.
With all parts and tools in hand, and taking your time, it's a half- to one hour job. Steering wheel starts at $800. Depending on OEM color matching, Ebay airbag start at about $400. Brand new airbag $1500.
