Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just want to get an idea of how many of 911uk members stick to OPC warranty or any warranty as such on their 996.... Excuse the phrasing of the poll.... Targeted towards the 996, as the age is creeping and wondered how many still thought its worth it bearing the warranty/value ratio. -- (Edited the title, to remove the word Poll... didnt relise it would come up automatically)

POST 2Original post

the question is, who offers 3rd party alternative warranties :?: answer's please :!:

POST 3Original post

Owned my car for few days over 2 years. More than got my money back both years + made use of roadside assistance. No brainer IMHO, although i initially only renewed it to protect against a big bill e.g. engine going pop.

POST 4Original post

The fact the roadside assistance is European is also good.

POST 6Original post

But so many things seem not to be covered by the warranty, as evidenced on this forum by some of the posts. So do you really just consider it a warranty in case the engine goes? :?

POST 7Original post

I view the Porsche approved warranty like any other form of insurance - depends on how much risk you are willing to take For the avoidance of doubt the below lists what it does cover..... ......and the exclusions.....

POST 8Original post

Initially i did see it insurance against engine/gearbox. But in two years i have had: New rads, coil pack, oil pressure switch, oil breather system, RMS(not strictly necessary but i needed a new clutch  ). when my batterty failed, I used Porsche Assist(RAC rebadged) who were with me within 30mins of that call, great service. Only thing i have had to pay for was a wheel baring. I have paid £1500 but had work in excess of £5k done(at OPC rates).

POST 9Original post

The Porsche warranty is actually v good value compared to BMW, who are expensive (£1400 for an Alpina B3S) and have a £250 per claim excess. Still don't have it though I'd imagine there are other 3rd party providers, e.g Warranty Direct, it'd be interesting to compare cover.

POST 10Original post

When I purchased and had the OPC 111 point check done, the following were done under warranty and would have cost £1100 including the labour (I have a copy of the invoice to Porsche GB Warranty Account) RMS and aux shaft seals replaced and both aircon condensors I have since had the wiper/indicator/computer stalk module behind the steering wheel replaced (something broke inside) I have just extended the warranty for another year - despite the £895 cost and I know it doesn't cover everything or wear and tear items but as a someone new to the world of the 911 I have found I can sleep easy at night - not something I could say about previous "reliable" german marques I have had the misfortune of owning without a warranty

POST 11Original post

I think it's worth it as I've just had the whole engine replaced and it came fully dressed so basically everything is new, manifolds, alternator, coils, air conditioner compressor etc. So even if i carry on with the warranty for the next 7 years on mine I would still be in pocket. I also think it is good because it covers cars upto 10 years old (9 is the last year you can extend it) and 125,000miles, I don't know of any other manufacturer that has this longevity of warranty. I could buy a ferrari 430 used easily these days as they are very affordable in the classifieds but i couldn't take the 6 grand a year service and running costs, no car or sum of parts is worth that IMO. It's just dead money. I wouldn't buy a BMW M car and warranty as it's a joke the cost of it and it shows how many actually go wrong. The premiums have doubled and there is an excess WTF lol... Also the depreciation in M3's and M5's are astonishingly bad. You can see why the clever people by Porsche and yes I'm tight

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, a few Q's regarding this- -Does this mean that service *has* to be done by OPC? - Im not sure if OPC has the "winter service check", similar to bmw but if so are these or other similar service compulsary for warranty to be valid? (im sure ill be able to fill the antifreeze and adjust the tyre pressure etc) - How is wear and tear defined? I know the general definition but with OPC are parts classified as "comsumables" i.e wear/tear? I ask because when trying to get warranty work done on an e46, its almost as you dealing with lawyers... - Also, Im aware that once the warranty lapse the 111-point-check needs to be carried out, so i presume that this does not need to be done if the warranty stays in sync...? On the flipside (i know this is getting a tad long)... - When taking a warranty issue up with OPC, do you have to pay for the inital inspection (i.e to determine if this is a warranty issue?) - And, if service is done via specialist, what do OPC look for, -service stamps/ or OPC part reciepts? All thoughts that are wizzing thru my head... Input apprec. Cheers

POST 13Original post

I think we'd all like to have an answer to these questions but I don't think there is a definative one. The better the relationship you have with your dealer it seems for some people the better the chance of getting the work done under warranty. I've not had any worries myself when I've had a problem with the car. I give them a call to book it in and they get me a loan car and get on with it. At my local dealer Bolton OPC they are very good and professional and the service I've had from them has been great. I suppose there's no point going in there and shouting how crap the car is when something goes wrong and expecting them to run around and sort it, I think you have to be polite and act in the correct manner to get the service you require. There is no winter compulsory check, the engine is a wear and tear item but they fix it or replace it if it goes wrong. They list all the items that are covered and I don't think they shy away from fixing them when there is a problem if that's what you mean. There are some postings of things that haven't been covered like say a door handle and I can understand why it wouldn't be covered but for the big things you are fully covered. I've had crap in some BMW dealerships and I don't go back to them and vow never to return, instead I took my business further a field and got wonderful service from Prestons BMW in Colne, Lancs. It's a bit futher out for me but worth every mile. If you aren't happy don't waste your time moaning to them just take your business elsewhere. I had the coils go on my 745i and a quick look on the internet showed that in the States they had them replaced FOC. Armed with this information and the print out to prove it I had a word with the service manager and he rang BMW, within minutes he had an answer and replaced all 8 coils FOC. Thank you very much I said and wow the performance with the new improved coils was astonishing. No you don't have to pay for them to look at the car if there's a problem, that's another BMW thing in case you don't get them to do the work after they've told you what the problem is. BMW's are so popular it's like the old Ford days 30 years ago, it's no bad thing but now you're into another class again here with the Porsche marquee.

POST 14Original post

Sorry for the long answers.......... No, the service does not have to be done by the OPC. As long as official Porsche parts are used and the items listed for each service in the maintenance book are covered then Indy servicing is fine. There is no concept of a Winter check for UK cars. There is a yearly maintenance service for cars that do less than 9,000 pa which must be done (this reverts back to the scheduled maintenance with an oil filter change in accordance with the mileage after two years or jumps to the major service if the mileage is up) Wear and tear. The obvious consumables, tyres, clutch, pads disc etc are not covered - the things that have "wear" surfaces. If a newly fitted clutch went bang because of defective parts or incorrect fitting then this is something different. I have found my OPC reasonable - so far only RMS and aux seals, air con condensors and self cancellation of the indicators without any arguement. I think a good relationship helps. Correct, once the warranty lapses the 111-point-check would need to be carried out again, it does not need to be done if the warranty is renewed before it runs out Taking a warranty issue up, if the item is covered then the investigation is covered. If not, you will have to pay. Specialist serving, a stamp in the book is no proof that the service has been done or the correct mileage - it is notoriously easy to forge service book entries. When I recently extended the warranty, the OPC didn't ask because my car has Full OPC service history so Porsche UK's records prove it. I expect when extending the warranty, if Indy servicing has been done they may ask for proof of maintenance to OPC standards as they will have no record. Also when making a claim they may ask for proof in the form of receipts with a breakdown of the work.

POST 15Original post

OPC Warranty comes with all my cars IMHO You'd be a fool to buy a car thats not covered by it Can you see Car Care Plan Forking out £6K on a new gearbox or £10K on an engine if the intermediate shaft snaps? on a warrnaty they sold for £500? Ok Its not cheap to renew at £895 I know theres a lot of talk that Porsches arent reliable etc, but talk to anyone with an aston or ferrari Ferrari warranty is now £3000 £895 is a sleep easy option imho
