I actually think it's probably the best porsche if you don't need rear seats.

Jalopnik hasn't referred to the 996 as "the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered Porsche you ever set eyes on" - but that's a comment about the 951 rather than a positive aspect of the 996, so I guess it doesn't count.

Besides being mid engine vs rear engine, rear seat vs no rear seat, etc...
What made YOU choose a 911 over a Boxster? Tradition? Looks? Speed?
Just curious to see what you all have to say...
Like Ralphie famously said: "The Boxster is a Porsche with panties"....
In all seriousness, they are great as well. With kids the rear seats in my 996 get a lot more use than you'd think and I like having a solid roof along with the fact that I always wanted a 911 since I was a kid. I could see a Boxster sharing garage space one day though. Having the engine RIGHT behind you on a nice day with the top down in a Boxster makes for a very fun driving experience.
The Boxster is a terrific car, wonderful balance, and incredibly forgiving if you drive it wrong. The 911, even though it has been tamed over the generations, is a different animal. How you drive one is significantly different than the other. Example: lifting throttle during a turn. Boxster: helps if you overcooked the corner and need to fix understeer. Do the same in a 911, and you'll be watching the rear end of your own car go sailing by. The 911 squats down when you nail the throttle from a stop, digs in, and takes off; Boxster jumps away with some tire hop. The Boxster is a dream through a slalom; the 911 adds its own dynamics to a slalom, with the pendulum effect building all the way, trying its best to buck you off.
I love both cars. Driving the Boxster is a drive in one of the best roadsters made; driving the 911 is like driving an awesome history book about car design.
The underlying joy of the 911 is Porsche's obstinant refusal to make the 911 mid-engine, and the engineering wizardry done over the past 50 years to make what ought to be undriveable one of the most fun cars to drive...ever.
My (not quite yet at the time) wanted a Boxter. I never liked the look of them (don't like any vert) and I kept telling her to get a 911 instead. She was adamant that she wanted the Boxter even though the 911 was her childhood dream car.
Finally she heard the pathetic excuse for an exhaust note and that was the end of it.
I really should have kept my mouth shut and saved $50k

Owning 5 986 Boxsters and a 996, I buy/drive Boxsters because they are 90% of the 996 for 60% of the price. Being mid-engine, The Boxster is more neutral in handling (not prone to swap the tail), and doesn't have the silly half-assed back seat most 911 owners use to haul picnic baskets, wine bottles, kids and their wives purse.
From the doors forward they are the same (99%) car. Like PW says, a Boxster actually looks good with the top down. And if you need a hardtop, they are easy to do.
The 3.2L Boxster puts out 250 horses vs the 300 horses of the 996.
At the end of the day, when you quit comparing 911's and porcupines, and Boxsters and hairdressers, they are both fantastic cars. In my garage, they will always share side/side garage space.
...and for every "on your way to the salon" Boxster quip, you'll find a "you must be hung like a hamster" 911 joke. So that all works out evenly, which is nice.
The question really should either be "what's the difference between a 911 and a Cayman", or "what's the difference between a 911 cabriolet and a Boxster"?
As Schnell said they are both good at wringing out performance utilizing the inherent strengths of their unique designs.
For some their 911 is their sharpest sports car, often is a coupe and is modified for tighter suspension control. If they have a mid-engine car it might be a Boxster, left stock, maybe a base model and is more of a pleasure car-although one that can be driven on twisty mountain roads with an ease and poise that is the subject of rave reviews.
Others, such as myself might have a 996 Cab that is not modified and a Cayman S (also stock). In this combination, the 996 is the pleasure car, and the Cayman is the serious sports car.
In stock forms, 911s have more noise isolation, tend to ride smoother, often have more creature comforts, are heavier, have a rear weight bias, and have more HP. They are quicker around a road course than the equivalent model year Boxster or Cayman mostly by virtue of more power. They are comfortable and fast.
Boxsters and Caymans are a more "efficient" design (lighter, mid-engine) and perform quite well with less horsepower, but also have a choppier ride (shorter wheelbase), and make a less comfortable interstate cruiser.
Now, when people start to modify either model, or if you compare Turbo 911s, etc, any of the above generalities can go right out the door.
This.
Although, I will say one drives a Boxster for themselves, not to impress others. It's a little like Miata that way: a great performance car that gets very little respect, except for those in the know.
It's interesting, at gatherings I meet people who have new Caymans, Boxsters, Cayenne Turbos, Panameras, etc. All excellent cars, many more expensive, newer, faster, etc. But, the 911 always gets the most respect (if that matters to you.)
This is true - you kind of have to be willing to not care about the crap that some people feel the urge to give you about driving a Boxster. I think the Boxster's a tremendous car - especially for what 986's sell for - but if you are going to get hung up because some idiot suggests that you're driving a chick car, the Boxster isn't for you.
I still regret selling my Boxster - I would LOVE to have my seal grey 986 in the garage next to my 996.
I remember an episode of Top Gear several years back (maybe 2007 or so) and Jeremy Clarkson was reviewing the Cayman S.
He drew a chart that showed the current HP of the base engine 911, Cayman S and Boxster. I recall it was something like this (but don't hold me to the numbers):
911 325hp
Cayman S 285hp
Boxster 245hp
He said that the Porsche engineers knew what they were doing since the 3 models were exactly 40HP apart in HP. Although he loved the Cayman S, he went on to say he would never buy one. Why? Because he wouldn't want to be sitting at a light and have a 911 pull up and think, "I should have bought a 911".
I went through this question after buying an '05 987 last year (for the spouse). The handling of the 987 is just terrific and it surprised me just how quick and responsive it is. Ours is a base model so does not have the power of the S.
For me: 98x are just too cramped (I'm 6-2) and I cannot find a comfortable setting. Leg room is about an inch too short and the seat back needs a lot more recline angle. For the Boxster specifically: I just don't like cabs (spouse can't seem to survive without one). I would really miss the storage behind the front seats (never have people back there, but so practical for errands and longer trips). Having driven an '87 Carrera for many years with somewhere around 10 DE track days I am comfortable with the weight bias and how to plant the rear in a turn exit. Maybe that's the thing. A well done turn in a 911 is a thing to behold.
Hurdi's car is full of gutter guard and smells like WD-40. My 986 might have been girly, but at least it didn't look and smell like some hillbilly's shed.
Wait, did you make that up?
True - OTOH, a poorly executed turn in a Boxster is one you still get to drive away from (without having to get flagged back onto the course, that is)...
Pushing a 911 is like taming a stray dog...any day it doesn't try to bite you is a good day.
When I was searching for my first Porsche, I was looking for stick shift, black or gray interior one to two owners no accidents, no more than 40000 miles and convertible if possible (I know to much to ask.)
I almost bought this red boxster beauty, 2009 with just 17000 miles one owner impeccable condition I hesitate because it was automatic and beige interior (which I don't like) after thinking and compare with the 997's most of them were multiple owners more than 40000 miles and some of them with accident reports.
I think to myself I will never find a vehicle with all the characteristics I want, unless if I buy it new, so I went back to the dealer 3 days later and the Boxster was gone. I was so upset with myself that day for not taking that car at that moment, luckily for me 2 months later my 996 appear with everything I was looking for and more
One of the first cars I ever _really_ loved driving was my dad's '58 MGA 1500 with a bored-out MGB 1.8 motor. 5 gears, power nothing, didn't even have door handles. My 986 was the closest thing I've had since to such a pure, fun car. I will probably pick up another Boxster eventually if I can find one with no PSM - it really is a reasonable facsimile of an elemental sports car.
The question really should either be "what's the difference between a 911 and a Cayman"
....I posted (see below) yesterday in the general discussion section after getting treated to a loaner `14 Boxster. Not my kind of car but I couldn't help thinking about the Cayman, in general terms the same car with a fixed roof....MBA Sailor, as for my reason for choosing a 911 over a Boxster? I've wanted to own a 911 for years, long before the Boxster was in existence. And, I am simply not a convertible person. The sister car Cayman however..........
Nice Box.....Boxster that is. My retailer was kind enough to provide a `14 Boxster loaner when I dropped off my car for a 30K service. I have to admit I enjoyed the car and surprised how much I liked it. Which makes me ask myself would I like a Cayman GTS (I'm not a convertible guy) more than a 991 Carrera S? According to my bank account and Porsche configurator there are about 130,000 reasons why I can't get a new 991. The Boxster was a base model and it felt great and my thought is a Cayman GTS would be a even better. Anyone own or have owned a 911 and a Cayman (any generation for both) and feel the Cayman is lacking something the 911 has?
My 9 and 7 year old boys say it's missing seats for them. I almost bought a Cayman S but the lack of back seats put me in my 996. I am glad I picked it but really liked the Cayman.
I owned a boxster for 12 years bought it new, but it gets such a bad rap. I actually think it's probably the best porsche if you don't need rear seats. I currently own a TT as I wanted back seats, and the speed and neck snap it provides when the boost really kicks in is something else. I have also always wanted a 911 and how can you go wrong with the TT. The racing inspired gt1 motor that won lemans in 98.
I think his term for it was "the cockster" !
So this is the fundamental problem - while the boxster handles great - is a great covertible - it is NOT a 911 ...
Well... I've wanted a 911 since high school (mid 1990's). My friend's father owned a used Porsche dealership (Specialized Porsche, in Ft. Lauderdale). I used to "help out" at the dealership sometimes... I'd help sweep up or shuffle cars around the yard... or, on a few occasions... I'd go take a 911 to fill up the gas tank, or drop the car off at the body shop or detailer, etc... I fell in love with older 911's (my dream still is to buy a 1980s 911). For now, a 996 fits my life and budget better... but my dream is to someday find a perfect mid-80's 911... So, I'm sure a Boxster is a fun car, and I am thinking of a Cayenne as a 2nd vehicle... but there was never a doubt in my mind that my first Porsche would be a 911.
Yeah - and that's the other problem Clarkson pointed out..
" you drive around in a boxster it just shouts - I couldn't afford a 911"
Lucky for us , the 996 is now a bargain ....
Although I love Top Gear, Clarkson is a mostly anti-Porsche twonk. Like a lot of his "reviews" for the past 4-5 seasons, Clarkson's films are more about giving him a chance to preen and drift $100,000 cars than to actually disseminate any useful info.
If you don't want a dedicated track weapon like an Exige or a x-bow, but you still want an awesome weekend racing fix, the Cayman (and to a lesser extent the Boxster, since it lacks a roof and the rigidity isn't as good) is a fantastic car.
Top Gear is fun to watch because they drop pianos on cars and blow **** up, but Jeremy's "reviews" are all but worthless.
Anyone who buys a 911 solely because the Cayman is cheaper is a douche nozzle.
I always dreamed of having a 911 not a Boxster. 996's are very well priced now and prefer the aesthetic as well as the history. I sold my 2003 996 Tiptronic with 54k miles and in perfect condition for $25,000, so they are within everyone's reach. Total tax and maintenance etc the car cost me $380 per month to drive said and done. I was sad when it sold in about 5 days to the first person who saw it. But turned the frown upside down when I got my 997.2 a week later.
I've always wanted a 911. Since I was 10 or so. The Boxster is a fine automobile--but, it's not a 911.
I would actually like to have a new generation Boxster. I like the look more than previous iterations and it would be a blast to drive.
But, it's not a 911...
TC
In case anyone else was wondering also:
douche nozzle
1) The underappreciated apparatus of the Douche that actually does the stinky work. Attached to the Douche Bag.
2) A male who acts and looks like an utter jackass. Someone who transcends common insults to the point that simply calling him a "jackass" or "douchebag" will no longer do. Much more offensive than simply calling someone a douchebag.
1) "Check out the cell phone clip on that Douche Nozzle".
2) "Can you believe that Douche Nozzle? He's walking around the party, talking to fat chicks and searching for an 'Insert Here' sign".
3) Oliver from Spring Break.
I reread this entire thread and there was not a single mention of "Lipstick Holders", "Makeup Mirrors" or "Non-Functioning Turn Signals".
Well done Gents!
MBA Sailor, Your story reminds me of a kid I knew in high school in Andover, Mass. He started to work with a friend whose father owned Wilmington Ford cleaning (spiffing) the cars in the lot. After graduation from HS he went to Emmerson College in Boston and got a job cleaning cars at Gastron Andrey Motorsports except now he was working on Itailian supercars and British luxury cars.
Flash forward forty five years and his name is synonymous with being America's best known Porsche collector, Jay Leno.
I saw Jay Leno at a comedy club in Los Angeles before he was famous. A pretty good performance. I thought Jerry Seinfeld was "America's best known Porsche collector."
I saw Richard Karn ("Al" from Home Improvement) at a hotel in Seattle. He was making the most of his "celebrity."
This was at the height of his career, when he was on Home Improvement
AND
pimping "Little Giant" ladders.
Last year, my cat fell off of the roof. Had to have his jaw wired shut for two months, and had to feed him through a tube from his neck into his intestines.

When I was younger I got caught in the rain on the national mall. We got soaking wet but what ever you know. We were young and in love. We ducked into the air and space museum to dry off. Looked at some stuff.
It was pretty cool. And then Gary Shandling walked by and tousled my wet hair and made a joke.
So that's how I began my life long friendship with Gary Shandling.

What's the difference between white eggs and brown eggs?
White eggs are most often laid by white or light coloured hens with white ear lobes, while brown eggs are most often laid by red-feathered or brown / dark-feathered chickens with red ear lobes.

[For the record, I didn't even know that chickens had ear lobes. Guess that's the last time they send me out to milk the chickens.]

I really like grilled chicken hearts. They're delicious.
And, growing up, my dad was good friends with Pele the soccer player. He often came to our house, and we went to his house in the Hamptons and his apartment in Rio, for New Years.
I also met Rodney Dangerfield on a flight to Brasil. I was about 6 years old, and had a jacket and tie on. My dad had me go up to Rodney, grab my tie, and say "I can't get no respect."
Wondering what happened to this 986 Boxster. I don't recall 996 models catching fire, anyone know?
http://www.khou.com/story/traffic/20...eway/16196915/
No Boxster here but I'm going to come out to all you macho guys here and say I much prefer my 951 to my 996. There isn't a single aspect where I would consider the 996 a better car. There I said it!
Along those lines, I'm in awe, jealous, and slightly pissed at how much a LS swap costs on a 951 vs. 996. $1500-$2k depending on where you get it from. If I had that car, it would instantly be a Porschvette. You might not agree but this car would be a no brainer for me in terms of a swap.
Cigarettes getting sucked into the driver-side intake is a known (albiet not common) issue with 986 Boxsters. People who "desnorkle" their Boxsters (removing part of the intake assembly to make it sound cooler), removing the intake screen in the process, have an even higher risk of ingesting debris into the intake. The Boxster's airbox is a great place to stoke an ember into a flame, since it's got a nice paper filter and lots of fresh air.
I have no idea if that's what caused this particular Boxster to go up in smoke, but it's been known to happen...
http://986forum.com/forums/general-d...ught-fire.html
As much as I'd like to argue/call you insane / whatever, you've owned both and I haven't, so I guess I'll have to take your word for it.
Besides, Jake in 16 Candles drove a 944, not a 911. Maybe he was onto something. Something besides Molly Ringwald, I mean.
Most people with 951's have dialed any lag out, these days its simple and cheap, MAFs and tuned dme's readily available, mild performance mods and tuning get you to 350hp with minimal lag. I'm at just over 400hp on my 3.0 build 951, I tell you it's a hoot!
996 has great off the line speed for ten yards or so, it's effortless, but my little four banger extends that first ten yards all the way to the redline. No comparison, it just keeps pushing.
Jalopnik hasn't referred to the 996 as "the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered Porsche you ever set eyes on" - but that's a comment about the 951 rather than a positive aspect of the 996, so I guess it doesn't count. The 944 is on at least one "worst sports cars of all time" lists, but again, that's not a "better" feature of the 996, so I reckon it doesn't count either.
Kidding aside, neither one of us is driving an air-cooled 911, so in the eyes of "true Porschephiles" (which I believe translates literally as "Formerly wealthy person in their declining years who smells suspiciously like adult diapers"), we're both losers driving automotive abominations.
Lol, yes I think it goes something like this:
356 - The Original - AARP Owners only, don't mention the word Beetle around these guys
911 air cooled - The Real Deal - Owners must carry a smug grin at all times and diss all other Porsches
911 water cooled - Not a real Porsche - Owners wished they bought a 993 when they were cheaper, don't mention IMS around the 996 guys unless you are a good listener
924 - Vorsprung Durch Technik - I've just got my first job and I didn't want a civic
944/951/968 - trans in the right place, engine in the wrong place - Owners will keep telling you it's the best handling car Porsche made and how it saved Porsches *** in the 80's
986 - What's a 911? - I work in a hair salon/interior designer/somewhere in the arts
Edit:
914 - VW Stepchild - I like to constantly tinker on cars and I know everything there is to know about rust prevention
928 - It's a V8 - Weekend cruiser for ex-911 owner who suffers from back pain.
HUGE difference!
When you slam on some cheap fiberglass panels all around the boxster and trick other bits like the headlights, it becomes 10x faster than any Porsche car in-the-world.
Also added a little sticker that says "PORSCHE" on the wind deflector just to help out those following up close... which is often lol
