The amount of change (drop) is translated into a level reading on the dash.
Leading evidence: 'Replace (drop) is translated into a level reading' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (drop) is translated into a level reading' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The really strange thing is the quick loss of all the digital read outs at the 2 second point....I am wondering if some expert here can say, yes, at two seconds, there is a test of the XXXXX circuit and that could help isolate if I have a short or something.

This pill in turn receives this and using the energy to generate/transmit its ID which is received by the same antenna and processed by the DME/security controller.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I changed it last night and it did not fix the problem......
Hi All,
I have a 1999 996. Every since I have had the car, I turn on the key and wait the 5 seconds while the oil level sensor gets a reading and was always pretty impressed with how close the reading was to my dipstick.
That being said, now, at two seconds remaining on the countdown, all the digital readings on the whole instrument cluster dim a little, get bright again at one second, and then the oil level symbol shows no oil or overfill and flashes on and off.
So, has anyone else ever had that specific problem occur? If so, what was your fix.
The car is throwing no codes.
Thanks,
Ray
Sounds like either the sending unit/sensor is bad or maybe a short in the wiring between the sensor and the gauge. That's just theory - I've got no experience with the actual parts or problem happening to my car. Maybe someone else knows about the oil level sensor.
Indeed quite strange. I assume the oil level is fine per the dipstick? Blinking means the cluster detects the oil is below "min". You got the oil level sender, the wiring and the cluster there. If the sensor is bad, there should be warning shown on the cluster though or it could be marginal but not enough to trip the warning.
That sensor is hard to get to. I suggest observe it and see if it always happens only when the car is measuring oil level hoping to isolate it only to that oil level measuring circuit. If you stop the engine and turn the key to measure the oil immediately, does it happen too?
I don't know about if it happens on the restart......I will check that out.

Thanks and I am still holding out hope this has happened to someone else. Thanks for helping me keep the thread alive.

Well, I'm no expert but the oil level sensor is fed a shot of electricity. A known level is fed to the sensor and then what comes out the other end is measured. The amount of change (drop) is translated into a level reading on the dash.
I could imagine the sensor gets this shot of electricity at some point before the 5 second timer expired so as to give the DME time to arrive at a reading.
Another possibility is the DME/security controller generates an RF signal that is transmitted from the antenna behind the ring that surrounds the ignition key slot. This RF signal is transmitted to the key module specifically the RFID pill inside the module. This pill in turn receives this and using the energy to generate/transmit its ID which is received by the same antenna and processed by the DME/security controller. If this ID is recognized the engine is allowed to crank.
Be sure the battery connections are good both at the battery and where they connect elsewhere. There have been some issues with the ground lead connection at the car. One tech advised me to just loosen the fastener then retighten it to improve the ground connection. I have never done this though so I have no idea if it helps with the noticeable but still minor issues one of my cars manifests. (The tech said it would.)
