Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, There is a audible Ticking noise seeming to eminate from the bottom of the engine on my C4. which has suddenly started. There is no oil smoke or increase in consumption. The frequency increases with revs and sounds quite metallic (maybe like a tappet sticking). The noise is there on start up and remainseven when the engine is hot. Mileage is 65K Is there anything simple or is this the beginning of the end?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

its a 99 996 - no warranty

POST 5Original post

Are you sure it's internal? Could be a belt or pulley fouling something if not? Had a similar noise on a previous car once and it turned out to be a broken water pump impellor, and cheaply and easily fixed.

POST 6Original post

Heard reports of similar woes - which turned out to be rattling coming from the cats ? but as mentioned get it along to your local indie ASAP

POST 7Original post

Could it be an exhaust gasket leak? That generally produces a 'ticking' noise that rises with the revs.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the help, will keep you posted as I will take to INDIE tomorrow.
