Also, 2 days ago I just topped up the oil and it was it's usual nice clean oil colour when the dipstick was checked but today it's completely different - it's now a rusty colour and there was a bit of goo on the end of the dip stick and quite a bit of custard around the neck of the filler.

When the 3.6 replaced the 3.4, were the problems that JPR is quoting, resolved?

fingers crossed it's a head gasket, as I've been hanging on to the theory (can't remember where I read it) that cars in regular use are less likely to suffer the cracked cylinder wall problem

i have indeed been using the car every day back an to from work for 12 months so things are starting to sound more promising the more people post messages.

I've been using Sd now for about 3yrs to look after my cars, he has never failed to diagnose or fix anything and always at a reasonable cost.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone, just wanted to run these symptoms past you...I noticed a drop in my water level yesterday as the water light came on. I thought this was strange as i've not long had 2 new rads. When i took the water cap off i noticed a custard-like substance on the underside of the cap...hmmmmm...whats going on here? It took about 3 pints of water to top it up which is quite significant and when the water level finally reached max i also noticed a fine oil slick on the surface of the water. Also, 2 days ago I just topped up the oil and it was it's usual nice clean oil colour when the dipstick was checked but today it's completely different - it's now a rusty colour and there was a bit of goo on the end of the dip stick and quite a bit of custard around the neck of the filler.
I know what you're all going to say - headgasket
But my local Porsche indie told me i need a new engine at a cost of £4500 (that was for an engine from a salvage car). Is he trying to rip me off? Is it really a new engine or just a head gasket change?
The car is a '99 C2 with 100k on the clock.
It was R.C. Lewis near me in Wrexham North Wales. I've since spoken to Sid Spanner here on the forum who's diagnosis is much more promising so it looks like i'll be sending the car down to him for the work. He said it's probably just the head gasket blown but will need to perform several tests to be sure. I'd rather send it to someone like Sid who knows what they're talking about and are prepared to repair it.
Has anyone had work performed by Sid at RSJ Sportscars?
Would be interested to know if anyone else has suffered these symptoms and what the outcome was cost wise.
Whatever it is it's going to cost me a few quid! Gutted!
Anybody wanny buy a 996 cheap? real cheap!
Sid is 1st rate, he did all the work on my 993 and current 996 GT3 when it was in the OPC network
and the new service facility at RSJ is 1st class, as good as OPC's
outcome wise, it could be bad but you wont know till he has a look, hang in there and keep us updated
hi all, sorry i didn't introduce myself. I've actually been a member since September last year (banannaboat) but lost all my log-in details when my PC crashed.
You may have read threads on here and other places about cracked cylinder walls, and I have no doubt your garage jumped to this conclusion simply because it is an early 996 with oil and water mixing!
Let Sid have a proper look (I presume it's an engine out / heads off exercise either way) and all of us with 3.4 996's will be waiting with baited breath for his diagnosis!

Sid says that a crack is a worse case scenario, if this was the case there would be quite a bit of white smoke and water out of the exhaust - havent seen any yet and the engine still sounds sweet.
FINGERS WELL AND TRUELY CROSSED
I've been using Sd now for about 3yrs to look after my cars, he has never failed to diagnose or fix anything and always at a reasonable cost. Also, he is the only person I trust to drive my cars when I'm not there. If your 996 is going cheap, i'll buy it and the first thing I'd do will be to give it to Sid to fix. (I'm serious, PM me) If you want to keep it, go meet him and you'll have one more reason to stick to the Porsche marque. Good Luck with it.
