Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I adequately express how impressed I have been with the KW variant 3's I have fitted on the 968.
Leading evidence: 'Install on the 968' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install on the 968' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If you are only replacing shocks alone and reusing original springs then it is much more work.

Suggestion
You can crack it before using the spring compressors when it has maximum tension on it and maybe get away without a rattle gun.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think my suspension has passed its sell-by date (88,000 miles in 8 years) - it is feeling very bumpy on our decrepit roads and I reckon the shock absorbers have stopped absorbing!
What do you guys recommend?
Current spec is M030, and I was going to fit GT3 suspension - but it doesn't fit a C4 as I found out to my cost! However, as I have no great aspirations to be a track-God, I now think I want to go softer rather than harder for every-day use (it is my daily driver and the roads around here are truly awful - as anyone who has driven directly from Silverstone to Buckingham will know!)
Pro-Max (very local) are offering a deal on Bilstein B16s for £2,299, but as these lower 30mm I suspect this will be even harder than my current setup.
is this a job that can be done DIY by the way, or does it need special tools? (Obviously will need a geo after)
Thanks in anticipation
First info assumes you are getting and all in one kit with springs and shocks.
I can't comment from a Porsche point of view but I've done my own suspension work on three other cars myself. It's simply a case of very tight bolts, top and bottom and replace. Ensure you chock the arms so when you undo the top or bottom nuts the arm doesn't crash down. If it's coilover you then have to deal with ride heights afterwards which is time consuming. I recommend you take height measurements prior. Do this by measuring from centre of wheelarch to centre of hub for each wheel and note it down. This gives you the ratio for later and the original heights.
Yes you will need an alignment afterwards.
If you are only replacing shocks alone and reusing original springs then it is much more work. You will need spring compressors most likely to stop the spring killing you when you undo the nut on the top. You may also find you need a "rattle" gun to undo this nut as it spins inside the shock. You can crack it before using the spring compressors when it has maximum tension on it and maybe get away without a rattle gun.
Some kits require you to place an insert into the original shock absorber housing. These are the hardest to do as you have to hacksaw into the original shock lopping it at the top, removing the guts, placing in an insert and drilling a hole in the bottom for a holding bolt. Still done them twice but they are more work.
After all that you have more of an idea on what you are up for. The work you have is determined by the kit you buy!
Enjoy,
Jeff
