Check by the door catches on the b-pillar for corrosion- the older ones seem to corrode a bit there.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hiya guys,
im just looking at buying a 1999 model 996, it has done 87Km miles, it has a full service history and is very clean and tidy inside and out,
before i buy i want to know if there is any major problems to look out for? also is reliability a problem on a car this age with this ammount of miles?
thanx
steve
Welcome Steve!
Main issues with 996s are the RMS (Rear Main Seal) leaking a bit of oil, and also the engine completely failing due either cylinder wall collapse, or a failed bearing.
RMS leak is common, apparently most non GT/Turbo Porsche 6 cyl water cooled engines weep a bit of oil (even the 997s). Not a big deal, it doesn't generally do any harm, and costs about £400 to fix, and is best left til you need a new clutch.
Other failures are rare, but require a new engine, or recon one by Autofarm or the like.
Occasionally one reads about gearboxes failing too. Rare though, listen for whines from gearbox.
Rads, header tanks and air con compressors are sometimes prone to failure, but straightforward to fix.
Check for interior damage- 996s can get a little tatty inside if neglected.
Check for noise/clonks from the suspension.
Check brake disc wear/corrosion, esp inside of the rear discs.
Check service book, for service stamps ideally backed up by bills. Check for presence of build sticker in front page of service book and under bonnet. No sticker might mean new front end...
If you can, get one with a proper warranty (you can buy a Porsche warranty for a car up to 10 yrs old after a 111 point inspection for under £1k), and
before committing to a purchase, get it properly inspected by an expert
- cost about £300.
Good hunting!
Welcome Steve..
Any more info on the car your looking to buy ? Owners-history-colour..ect..
As Robert said, a PPI is a must.
(Great reply Robert.. you'll be a MOD one day with replies like that)
hi- i bought my first 99 996 a year ago and have loved every bit of it.
I looked at loads and ended up buying the first one i saw- the one with the lowest miles (48k)and full service history.yes it has a slight RMS leak but as yet has not affected performance or oil levels.
Make sure that both keys have the origional transponders that work as these are an expensive item. only other probs ive had are the coolant header tank needed replacing and a jammed window mechanism. fixed both myself at around £200 for opc parts.
I shelled out £25k for mine and i rekon ive not lost as much in value as she still looks and sound like new. Enjoy.
thanx 4 the advice guys ill bare it all in mind next time i go see it.

Its been forsale for a while.. When I was looking for my 996 it was forsale then.. So it must be a good 6-7 months now !
PPI...
Pay no more than £20,000
Own it...
Enjoy it...
Oh &
Change the wheels...
so now i know an inspection is a must who do i get to inspect it? a porsche specialist or jus your average RAC dude?
if inspected and everything turns out good  whats the sort of price i should be paying for this car? Danial says no more than £20k any1 thinking anything different or is that about right?
steve
Thats Daniel, if you please -
I would start of low @19,500.. Nothing to lose !!
PPI - PARR, JZM,Fearnsport ect... The AA and RAC will not be good enough !!
If the car had not GT3 kit, I would say around 18-19,000 with that mileage.
When you go and see her, make sure you check everything you can..
Windows drop as you open the door-
A/C is cold-
Paintwork-
Sticker is under the boot lid is still there-
Service book (and bills if poss)-
Tyres should be 'N' rated-
Just a few things..And I am sure others will add to the list.
Nice car and yes I remember seeing it for sale a long time a well.
Agree with everything said above re PPI etc, and you MUST change those wheels
Good Luck with the purchase
Check by the door catches on the b-pillar for corrosion- the older ones seem to corrode a bit there.
Nice car, and one that would look really good with some GT3 alloys and white/grey lights all round.
I did think the orange side repeaters looked abit poo, i not sure wat the gt3 wheels look like but i thought the ones on it looked ok but it seems i dont know *****! ha ha. if anyone has a pic of the gt3 wheels could you post it please
