Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, all. I have a burned out bulb in my passenger side headlight assembly. It isn't the Xenon or the H7 bulb--it's a tiny bulb that is a "press and twist" bulb. I mean it's *tiny*. From what I can tell, it is the low beam bulb. My wife took the burned out bulb to an auto parts place a few mins ago, and they said the bulb had been discontinued, but that they can order one for $150. Wooooooooowwwwwww..... I've even been searching online, and the closest I can find to a bulb that looks similar is one for (I think) newer 911's that has a wire protruding from the tail end. Does anyone know what this part is and where I can find it? If needed, I'll post a pic of it when my wife gets back home this evening.

POST 3Original post

Is it the parking light bulb in the headlight? -Jason

POST 4Original post

If you can't find the bulb, let me know. I'll track one down and mail it to you for just half what the auto parts store quoted you.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

5CHN3LL--What a generous and unselfish offer! LOL! Yup, guys... that's the light. So it's a parking light? So where exactly are my low beam lights? The H7 doesn't come on until I turn on the high beams. The xenons burn all of the time... are they the low beams? (they also stay on with the high beams) Warehouse--do you sell them? What is the cost on those?

POST 6Original post

JonathanEngr I don't have them on the website, but I can send you a Paypal invoice for the bulb. It's $10.00 shipped anywhere in the US. -Jason

POST 7Original post

Bixenons are low beam and high beam and apparently the DRL's too. The H7 is an additional high beam to fill in the areas closest to the car

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks--that's good to know! I'm not a fan of how white Xenon bulbs typically are (love the way they look, but don't like the way they illuminate things). Seems like I read somewhere that things illuminated with a more yellowish cast (3k-4k) are easier for the human eye to see.

POST 9Original post

MKI cars with HID headlights are Litronic, not Bi-xenon like MKII cars. The primary difference is that in Litronic lights, the HID bulbs are used for low beams (and DRLs) and halogen lamps are used for high beams. In the Bi-xenon lights, the high beams are a combination of the HID bulb and a halogen bulb. There's a shutter that opens when the high beams are activated that allows the HID lamp to work as a high beam in conjunction with the halogen lamp. Jonathan - you can purchase HID bulbs that produce light in a lower color temperature, more in the yellow part of the spectrum. The OE HID bulbs are 4,300 K, which mimics natural sunlight and is the light color that is optimized for the human eye.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahhh... no question that the bulbs in this car has been replaced with 6000k to 8000k. They're a very white light--not blue--but definitely lacking any yellowish tint at all like 4300k should be. I see what I assume to be the ballast on the headlight assembly... I don't have to replace the ballast with the light? I can just buy the xenon bulb?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 11677503

Just want to clarify that the MK1 cars uses both the xenon AND halogen as a supplement in high beam mode. The reason why they are not truly "bixenon" in the traditional sense is there is no internal scatter shield mechanism in the MK1 xenon lights. Rather, there is a motor that shifts the whole xenon headlight assembly upward in high beam mode, rather than just moving a scatter shield up within the projector housing. As for color temps, 4300 Kelvin is what all OEM's uses and that is the lowest available in a white hue. The next lowest is 3K but that is for people wanting french yellow style fog light output color. Also 5000k is closer to the Sun but 4300 K produces the most light output.

POST 12Original post

Good point - I didn't really describe that accurately. Typically in low beam mode, the Bi-xenon lights have a very distinct "cut off" that is determined by a "shutter" that blocks the "high" portion of the light. When the high beams are engaged, the shutter mechanism no longer blocks this part of the light (sounds like this is accomplished by moving the light assembly). In any case, the high beam function on the MKI cars is slightly different than that of the MKII cars.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 11677813

In true Bixenon lights, there is a small motor that just lifts only the scatter shield up by less than an inch when high beam is activated. The light assembly stays in place and doesn't move.

POST 14Original post

In the Mk I Litronic lights, is it possible to run a brighter or higher wattage halogen bulb for the high beams?

POST 15Original post

Interesting. That's what I thought the Porsche lights were, but you're telling me that they aren't. I've been pretty surprised with the difference between the 996 headlights and the 997 headlights. The beam pattern in the 997 is significantly different than the 996. I thought they would be pretty similar...

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I never really paid close attention. I thought the high beams were only the H7 bulbs coming on to supplement the Xenon bulbs. In any case, the bulbs I now have (Xenon) are exceptionally white. I'm not sure if anyone noiticed my question above, but can just the bulb be replaced (not the ballast). I didn't know if you had to buy the bulb/ballast together or if I can just get a bulb.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 11679308

I think I may have confused you. I was stating that mk1 lights aren't true bixenon in the traditional sense. I believe the mk2's are.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 11679735

You can just get the bulb(d2s), but you should buy them in pairs as they tend to color shift with usage. Also going with a good brand will minimize the chances of having inconsistent color between one bulb to another due to better QA testing and matching.
