Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

I would definitely give Hartech a call and ask for their opinion as they are starting to identify symptons that may result in an engine failure....and an early diagnosis will hopefully result in a smaller repair bill.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My neighbour has just bought a 996 targa ('04) and has notied a bit of smoke when first starting it. He has taken it back to where he bought it who have had 2 OPC's check it out and give it the all clear. Is this typical on a 996, as my 964 does this after having stood for a couple of days, and is due to oil settling in the cylinders and being bunt off when started? Are the water cooled engines similar to air cooled in this respect?

POST 2Original post

They can be a bit smokey on start up, but with a history of engine problems the very first thing I'd do is make sure he's got a OPC or a Hartech warranty...most others aren't worth the paper they're written on. Does the smoke come from one or both exhausts? If it's only one, then that potentially is quite serious. I would definitely give Hartech a call and ask for their opinion as they are starting to identify symptons that may result in an engine failure....and an early diagnosis will hopefully result in a smaller repair bill. Did your neighbour buy it from an Indy or privately?

POST 3Original post

These are the signs that Baz (Hartech) suggests you watch out for: "smoke from one side, a leaking expansion tank, low compression on one cylinder, a misfiring cylinder or a replaced coil - might become a good early sign of bigger problems to follow. " Is your friends car burning a lot of oil or showing low oil pressure? If so, that would also suggest a problem. The 996 engine is not a real oil burner like BMW etc.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was from a local dealer who deals in high end cars, not just Porsche. I'll have to ask if it comes from both exhausts.

POST 5Original post

> It was from a local dealer who deals in high end cars, not just Porsche. Ok. The reason for the question is that sometimes (albeit rarely), Porsche GB (or OPC) will offer to contribute something to the costs if it hasn't been outside of the OPC network. In this case, it clearly has been outside. It's £900 to get an OPC warranty and is something, in this case, I'd really recommend. If it hasn't already it will need to go through 111 point check at an OPC which will cost about another £300.

POST 6Original post

it is very normal for 996 to smoke on start up.if it is persistant then the oil separator is at fault or the car could have been overfilled with oil in which case oil is still sitting in the inlet manifold. the is a modified part for cars with this problem
