Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The symptoms: Foot flat to the foor in third gear, about 4000rpm - started to lose power  , lifted off a little, power returned, revs then climbed ok with about half to threequarters throttle, changed up, 4th gear power Ok. NO pops or bangs from the exh. Went to try and make it happen again and could'nt? Car still goes like it always has and it runs always on v-power. I thought maybe a plug?? One thing though, I had been through some very heavy weather about 5 mins before - wondered about water on the MAS? Any thoughts??

POST 2Original post

In the days before all these fancy electronics, I would say it sounds like a plug lead or HT lead breaking down. These days it'll be £500 for the diagnostics and as much as we can screw you for to repair it. Oooh, that's a nice suit Sir's wearing. Would Sir like a cup of coffee? Of course we take American Express. Take it to an Indie if it repeats the symptoms.

POST 4Original post

Did it produce a CEL (check engine light) or flash it for a few seconds? If so could be emissions related ie. too rich/too lean so the electronics stop the detonation for a few revs. Could be coil pack related, your OPC (or indy) should be able to tell you if a MAF, coil pack fault, lambda is the cause.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys.... no Cel light on - not even a flicker - its the first thing I looked for right at the time it was happening. Its booked into Northway for a full check up and service now - so hopefully they'll find anything nasty via some diagnostics. Plugs, Leads or Coils would be on my list too... but as has been said, these days it could be any one of many electronic doobri's :? . We'll see  ....

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well its been in for a full major service and check over. Nothing showed on the diagnostics history :? Northway reckoned it might have been inside the tolerances of the computer fault log?? therefore not been recorded? Anyway, guess I will have to wait and see if anything recurs. One interesting comment did come out though about the fault log - was told that if a sudden fault occurs the system logs it and stores it, then if it hasnt occured again after 50 start-ups it deletes this fault from the history? And it rates each fault in its memory depending on the number of occurrences? Dont know if this is true or not?

POST 7Original post

You obviously haven't used any AFN's recently..... :x

POST 8Original post

Might it have been a greasy bit of road/momentary loss of traction leading to the traction control reducing power for a moment? I've noticed mine seems to work without the psm light flashing sometimes.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hmm... PSM cutting in... hadn't thought of that. It was on a bend too, although a fast wide one. But, it would explain things :?

POST 10Original post

I remember this post from sometime back and was reminded of it late last night on my way home - On the M25 where it meets the M40 into london is long sweeping 270degree left hander - if you are fortunate enough to have the slip to yourself and are driving a 4S you may be tempted to consider breaking the speed limit in order to experience the true grip and power of a 4 wheel drive car on a wonderful and rare piece of smooth tarmac. You could in theory present 90+ on the speedo in 3rd on this bend. At this speed and at those high revs in third there is going to come a point where traction control or engine or both will either kick in or cut off revs thereby causing a lack of power - Down as far as what could be 4-5000rpm on glancing down. As I joined the M40 in 4th and powered in to lane 1, I was reminded of your post. Anyway all that added to soft PZeros makes me think it could have been tyres but that would only be in theory you understand.
