Then when the mufflers can no longer remain in service replace them and if you want perform the mod on the new (probably were I you I'd seek out used mufflers) mufflers.

I want to do a fisterD mod and when I pull the mufflers off, they look a little rusted. Are they worth modifying?

Looks like surface rust. Forward your pictures to Darin Fister and he should be able to tell you if they are acceptable for exchange. Mine had no rust so I cant provide a comparison, sorry.

That's more than surface rust. The seam is starting to split. Still have some life left in them but the end is near.

I agree with this. I would add for the OP's benefit you can do the mod to these mufflers and live with them and the mod to see if you like the mod. Then when the mufflers can no longer remain in service replace them and if you want perform the mod on the new (probably were I you I'd seek out used mufflers) mufflers.

Are they repairable? I am going to take to a muffler shop to do the mod. So if not too expensive, I would have them cut it open or just reweld the seam?

The muffler shop will let you know if the mufflers are worthy of being mod'd and returned to service without or with some appropriate welding.

Poke at it with a screwdriver. Any heavily corroded weak metal will be able to be punctured with a screwdriver. If it seems solid, there's no reason why you can't get the seam welded.
