Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I imagined I would'nt need it with the car being used so regularly.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm stranded at the office now as the 996 has died.
It has a flat battery, not really turning the engine over, not starting at all, and the alarm goes off. The windows also now won't go up to the top.
It started fine this morning, drove for 1.5hrs, stopped to fill up, parked up at 8.30, and tried to leave just now for a meeting and its dead.
No probs starting to date, no warning lights showed today. Battery condition gauge just under 14, which seems to be the normal range.
Is it possible for a battery to just give up the ghost suddenly?
Anyone got any other ideas of what might have come upstuck?
Called the RAC anyway...
Robert, how old's the battery? and do you keep it on trickle charge? Before i replaced my battery late last year (original battery, 7 years old...) i had very similar issues (including an exceptionally embrassing jump start from friends we were visiting on the forecourt of tescos)
If its drained a number of times eventually they just won't hold enough of a charge to turn the engine over, even after driving 1.5 hours. In the instance above mine started ok (bit wheezy but started nonetheless), drove for 20 mins, went to tesco for fuel and then started up and... yup, nothing.
replaced it with a bosch silver and keep it on a trickle charge and don't worry now about short journeys (i.e. start up, tesco for fuel, then tesco for shopping etc) with a number of starts.
It's the battery, the RAC/Porsche Assist will diagnose that but as Tim said they seem to work, starting becoming more sluggish then nothing! Find a nice fellow employee and get replacement battery
The car's used daily, for good long trips. I've had it six months now, and the overall mileage is quite low, so the damage may have been done before...
The 911 has the dubious honour of being the only car I've ever had actually let me down.
Don't worry about that matey, the battery is the weak spot on a 996, heavy power drain from the electronics coupled with an immense amount of cranking juice needed to start them it's bound to happen.
Get yourself a CTEK trickle charger
Sounds like battery to me too - mine went on the C4S - no warning, just nothing one winters morning !
Where in south Oxfordshire are you based - used to live in Wallingford myself
I reckon its the battery too, thanks for the views, just wondered if it might be something more sinister given that it was quite happy this morning.
Gastro, I'm about 3 miles from Wallingford, in Moulsford. Where in W'ford were you?
another vote for the CTEK.
I got the basic model for about £36 on t'ebay, dead simple plug and play (either crocodile clamps or permanent eyelets) and leave it on. It also conditions the battery (charges, lets it drain a little, tops up etc) and will diagnose if there's a drain elsewhere on the car (flashes the LED on the basic model) so you can get it sorted if there's a fault...
I do have a charge-o-mat trickle charger (in fact I won it at the 911uk Curry Night! Thinking about it, I won another one at the last curry night and SunnyD still has it)
I imagined I would'nt need it with the car being used so regularly.
911UK curry night, trcikle charger and crocodile clip type nipple clamps? I'm surprised you came through that unscathed.... :?
Mine's only a weekend toy (mainly) so keep it charged all the time but as Damian says once they go they seem to go quite quickly. As an aside i kept the old battery for a period and put it on the CTEK to charge it up and keep as maybe a spare.... the CTEK never registered it as fully charged which i took to mean it couldn't put charge in as fast it was draining (unattached to anything). Hence i threw it away.
All sorted now, thanks for the replies.
As you all suspected, the RAC man came (very promptly I should add) and diagnosed a dead battery, so trotted down the road to PCT to have another one fitted which they did.
However, whilst mooching around the showroom waiting, I fell deeply in love with a 997S but there you go, maybe next birthday...
Hi Guys
Which CTEK model do you recommend or use to trickle charge your cars? Mine is now only a dry weather weekend car hence will probably be in the garage for a while once the weather worsens,.
Dejan, i've got the basic 3600 model which seems to do everything i need it to, i.e. charge the battery and tell me if there's an electrical fault draining it, cost around £36 from the bay
