I have heard about an issue with late 90's-early 2000's 911's. Supposedly an inferior material used resulted in severe cylinder scoring after 40-K miles. When Porsche realized the problem they changed the material used. Any truth to this idea? Thanks

No not true. It affects all cars up to around 2012, and maybe later. The 3.4 996 is probably the least prone to it. 3.6 more so. 997 is more a case of when not if.
