Hello All,
New to this forum and looking for some help. Recent purchase of a 2010
Boxster S
, and slowly working my way through some of the issues that I hope will get it as sorted as it can be.
Just for information, I’ve already put full new front suspension on, renewed all the front brake pipes, new clutch, rear brakes etc. I managed to break a subframe lug while trying to remove one of the bottom arm bushes, removed it and took it down to a specialist welders who did a fine job of sorting out my error!
Anyway, I have a knock that sounds like it’s from the steering wheel but actually it is coming from the sliding splines in the lower intermediate steering shaft. Does anyone know if it is the male part that wears with the white shim thingy, or the female?
Thanks in advance,
Steve
Steve, did you manage to solve the issue?, I have noticed knocking sound from intermediate steering shaft too but noticed its coming from u-joint [RED ARROW], I got the part already but instead of replacing the whole unit trying to see if I can just replace the male part [MRKED BLUE].
Are you sure it's the u-joint, or is it in that top splined section? Have you tried loosening and retorquing the bowl with the yellow paint?
I had a knock in my 2010 steering that turned out to be a slightly loose clamping bolt at the splines to the steering rack input stub. Retorquing the bolt fixed it.
Just checked, it was little bit loose, torqued it to 23nm (17ft-lb) but knocking is still there, Ill try to replace the u join / shaft inside.
First go I torqued it to 17 ft-lb and there was still a bit of play. I went up to 20 ft-lb and that fixed it: was fine for me but don't blame me if you strip something, lol.
I suggest you recheck that clamp, then also check the clamp at the input to the steering rack. If you take off the left front wheel you can get a straight shot at the bolt with a long extension, just rotate the wheel so it's pointed to the left. You shouldn't have to guess where the play is: watch/feel/listen to each link in the shaft as you have someone move the wheel back and forth for you and you should be able to find exactly where it's knocking.
Checked the clamp screw torque that connects to the rack and it was very loose, I torqued it to 21 ft-lb and 90%of knocking sound is gone! I won’t swap the intermediate shaft and U join and will tighten the inside clamp to 20 ft-lb tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion that resolved it!
No prob. It seems to be at least somewhat common, there have been several other people on here who have had the same issue.
Loosen the other bolt slightly, then retorque to your target value.
