Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used 3M Spray Adhesive and let it dry for several hours, then "tanned" the leather with some Canola oil I found in the kitchen.

If I were to try this at home, I would replace the paper clips with those ziploc vacuum storage bags.

The piece of rubber surrounding the ignition switch could use some change.

Suggestion
Like Porsche does although they might also use thinner leather to begin with.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have had some spare time lately to try something I have been pondering over the summer. The piece of rubber surrounding the ignition switch could use some change. I originally painted it silver, but it was too easily scraped off. So I decided to try another route, leather. Its a first attempt and I see some areas for improvement next time but overall I like the result. I'll post of pics of it installed tomorrow. I used 3M Spray Adhesive and let it dry for several hours, then "tanned" the leather with some Canola oil I found in the kitchen.
The impressions left by the clips are not as noticeable now they have been removed for a few hours (photos taken shortly after removal)
Thoughts ?
If I were to try this at home, I would replace the paper clips with those ziploc vacuum storage bags. You'll get a more uniform coat of adhesive, no indents, and eliminate any air pockets. (Doubt that would be an issue on a piece so small though)
Wait, I thought "leather cheerio" meant something else entirely.
While I'm not a fan of the brown leather cheerio (heh), I am a fan of your DIY skills. The clips were pro-level, but adding the golf ball takes it up to boss-level.
LOL, wow I wasnt even aware of that term until now.
SV - I thought about a vacuum system but couldnt get a bag to seal well enough. I think the other option would be a weight on top of it, while resting it on a towel.
There is an antenna behind the surround which is used to beam an RF signal to the RFID pill in the key head. This provides enough energy for the RFID pill to transmit its ID which is received by the antenna and decoded by the security system and if the code is found to let the engine start.
I do not think a bit of leather would attenuate the signal significantly to interfere with the signal from the pill getting back to the antenna but I guess you'll find out when you go to start the engine. If the engine starts, no problem. If it doesn't...
BAD.TAG,
If you were to skive the edge in about 1/4" you could wrap the leather around the escutcheon to clean up the edges. Like Porsche does although they might also use thinner leather to begin with.
BAD.TAG: On a separate issue, referring to post #12 pic #2 I have read that keeping numerous keys on a ring with the Porsche key can have a detrimental effect on the life span of the ignition switch which many complain is suspect to begin with. I don't know, maybe others can chime in with real knowledge.
I am aware of the short comings as I pointed them out with each post. I am not trying to please anyone, just trying something new. Its not permanent
OKB - I actually didnt know that, may have to check them out
fpb111 - I was thinking of something like that if I try it again, just a matter of finding thin enough leather
Wildbill32 - Thanks for the note. If thats true I may have to change that
