So continued to use my car locally with a plan to get it fixed at her next service, then this morning the flashing stopped and the gear box worked perfectly loose wire ?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hope someone can help took the 911 out today for a drive had her for 7 years Now she has been super reliable but today the dash board gear selection lights flashed 4th to D and although the car drove it didn't go into 5th possibly didn't go into 4th the manual mode didn't work any ideas ?

POST 2Original post

Take it to the shop, there's not much you can tinker about with the gearbox. And, as stated in the car manual - flashing 4th is the gearbox fault signal.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any ideas what’s happening here ? So continued to use my car locally with a plan to get it fixed at her next service, then this morning the flashing stopped and the gear box worked perfectly loose wire ? so glad it’s back to 100% function when people dis Tips as slush boxes, without a fully functioning Tip box I agree,,, it really is a slush box with Tip operating the car comes alive

POST 4Original post

So you've been driving it with gearbox fault for the past half year? Brilliant ownership practice.

POST 5Original post

Hi There That fault will put the car into a limp mode where it will not select top and will revert to a preset "map" for gear changes. Also as you have discovered the manual change function will not work. It can happen as a result of a low fluid level (but if the car is not loosing any then prob not) or it is getting confused messages about which gear the car is in. This can be a failed/failing selector switch or a badly adjusted linkage. On the 986/7 there is a multi function switch on the side of the gearbox which often fails, but the 996 does not have that. It can also be a low battery, and that is the first thing I would check. If the battery is old then change it. These cars are very sensitive to an ageing battery. All the best Berni

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thx useful info it may be the battery will explore this further currently car is working perfectly after I have had the car on trickle charger for a long while as it doesn’t get driven much.
