Performed · outcome unconfirmed

Older design engines (aircooled were the worst) tended to distort more dimensionally as they ran the first few hundred miles so you went easy on them as the parts adjusted to each other.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, I just bought a new Silver Caymen S a week ago and so now I'm in the break-in period. Is there a consensus on what the best way to break it in is? So far I'm trying to drive at different RPMs, and of course not laboring the engine or exceeding 4200 rpms like Porsche says. Otherwise, I really can't wait till it's broken in so I can give it some real driv'n. The car is fantastic, my last car was a 2001 Corvette, and the difference in handling is quite substantial. I wish they had these back when I bought the vette.

POST 2Original post

The break-in procedure is simple and well-documented: 1. Use all the gears (i.e. don't stay in one gear all the time). 2. Don't exceed 4,200rpm for 2,000 miles. 3. After that, enjoy the car.

POST 3Original post

There are about a thousand posts on this topic, with no agreement. See below for several relevant threads.

Welcome to Cayman Club! Please check out the threads listed below your thread. There are many, many discussions on this. Everyone has their own opinions and they are just that, opinions. You manual gives you guidelines on what to do. Porsche built the car, they may know what they are talking about. Best of luck!

POST 5Original post

The Porsche break-in period baffles me. Most watercooled engines don't require it nowdays because they retain the factory tolerences from day one and the rings seat almost instantly. Older design engines (aircooled were the worst) tended to distort more dimensionally as they ran the first few hundred miles so you went easy on them as the parts adjusted to each other. Curiously, most motorcycle engines recommend break-in also. It's possible that the Porsche rings are not very soft and require a longer period to bed in.
