The worst thing was the first test drive after installation, I noticed the high revs, backed it out of the garage, but when it continued run away I pulled back in.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just finished replacing my oil filler tube. After reassembly the idle didn't exist and it would rev up to 5k if not in gear.. Long story short, the cable end at the throttle body is roughly 5mm from seating on the idle screw. Idle will return to normal if I manually push it to the stop, and if I unhook the cable. The throttle body moves freely, no sticking and shuts firmly. According to an AI, it was possible the cable was pinched during installation when the alternator was put back and torqued down. After pulling the alternator back out, I couldn't find anything resembling the cable back there. I used my bore scope to look around the filler tube and didn't see any cables or wiring pinched between it and the engine block. I have a 4/98 model, and it doesn't appear to match what the AI says it should look like. So I'm stumped at this point. I really don't want to tear out the plenum again. My bore scope also won't squeeze between the cable at the back on the top so I can't determine what route it's actually taking. The worst thing was the first test drive after installation, I noticed the high revs, backed it out of the garage, but when it continued run away I pulled back in. Unfortunately the engine was pulling so strong, I couldn't stop despite standing on the brake and pulling the handbrake up. So I plowed into the wall around 5 MPH, smashing my chest freezer, punching a whole through the wall, knocking the washroom cabinets into the inner wall. I don't have the damage estimate yet on the damage to the house, but the car only had the paint scrapped of the bumper. Minimum out of pocket, 2.5k with the deductibles on the car and house. Here's some pictures from the engine compartment. I couldn't get a picture of the bore scope on the filler tube, glare from the sun. But the tube is clear on the sides from the base to where it cleared the top. So any additional suggestions are more than welcome.

POST 2Original post

The throttle cable is not seated in the throttle body bracket on the top of the throttle body. Undo the cable from the throttle body and give it a really hard and strong pull. Hard to explain but the cable must be seated correctly in the plastic bracket on the top of the throttle body.

No, because I have it removed from the throttle body while looking behind the alternator for crimping or binding. Otherwise the cable runs through the bracket secured in the throttle body on the right side with the back of the bracket facing way from the body and aligned on the right straight down the side and secured. The cable will pull, but not recede without bending, but this is more likely just the pedal has more resistance. Bottom adjustment frozen. Tried it once. But went back to look for it binding elsewhere. Why? Because it was working correctly before I began working on it. So it stands to reason it was something I'd somehow done in a boneheaded way. Currently my predicament is following the cable from the throttle body. It goes directly over a rib on the plenum aligned with the cable path, then over the intake before disappearing behind it. When I wiggle the cable I don't see any movement but I can hear it sound like I hitting something and stops. The information I currently have appears to be wrong. with the adjustment under the center that appears headed up to the center, couldn't suddenly shift left behind the alternator then to the back and up over the top. That's asking too much and expect it to move smoothly or promptly. How do I gain access to the back firewall to see if the grommet is inserted and firmly in place. It's also supposed to be possible it is the source of the binding. Thanks for your help

POST 4Original post

When I pulled a motor on a 99 with throttle cable, I did not route it correctly and the idle was high. I made a note that states: Throttle cable: Routes below two fuel lines that go from left side of engine to right side. Routes inboard of metal bracket on front of motor. If it is not routed this way, it won't return to idle. If you want more info, let me know, I could share a photo album with pictures of the engine out. You can lower the engine and transmission and then you might be able to see from the transmission side up and over, and again from the engine compartment hood looking foward. I had to lower the engine to get the cable correct.
