Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I put the car on a lift and wiggled, tapped, hammered, shook, poked, jabbed, and messed with everything under the vehicle and found the source! From scrolling through various transmission/clutch related threads, it seems like a few other people have heard this.
If you roll your windows down, and switch gears with the engine off, you'll hear the transmission changing gears. This is the exact same noise, just at a difference frequency, when youre parking/driving in a parking lot/going over speed bump with a partially engaged clutch. I've found that the large selector arm thingy wiggling axially on its shaft.
This large selector arm thingy to be exact. (Not to be confused with the small selector arm thingy)
Now I need help figuring out what actually needs to be replaced. Not sure if there is a consumable bushing or shim that may be missing, or if there is something going on inside the transmission, as I doubt there shouldn't be any axially play on this part. Any input would be appreciated. If anyone is in OC, a recommended reputable indie shop would be appreciated as well.
P.S. The clutch, fly wheel, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing were all done apx 15k miles ago.
P.P.S Had light weight fly wheel removed, and oem put in.
Or ppl just don't have the answer. I'm here long enough that I think I've seen only one or 2 threads about your problem with no resolution (as far as I remember). I'm pretty sure it's not a very common problem/complain.
I wish I had taken a feeler gauge at the time to see how much play there was. Alas, my laser eyeball measurement wasn't well calibrated that day. Probably 5-10 thousandths of play, enough to go tappy tappy.
I almost can't believe how clean the bottom of your tranny is... The cable clips are even intact, without any zip ties... Sorry, I can't help you with the noise, as I can't hear anything...
OCD ? Eh, maybe...but I don't think that's so uncommon in these forums
Mine does the same. The chatter is apparently from the clutch/DMF. Two shops (both reputable in the DFW area) have stated that it's common on the 996 and 986.
