Had the oil & filter in my CS changed at my local dealer yesterday. With 5k on the original oil & never adding any, I wanted to get it out of the engine.Supplied my own 8 quarts of OEM Mobil 1 & dealer provided the filter.
Drove 50 miles home & the car sat in the garage until this morning. When checking the read out this AM, the level was 2 bars down, at the one just above the very bottom one. Thought this was a bit strange considering they put in all 8 quarts with a filter as reguired.
Called the service manager & was told this is the way it should be. We can't be as accurate as the original factory fill up & I shouldn't add any oil until the level goes to the very bottom bar.
Is this BS or should I add 1/2 quart to bring up the level one bar? Comments please.
2 days later...After a short trip & another 24 hours of sitting in the garage, the oil level now reads at the center bar. Down 1/2 quart. I will not add at this level.
I don't think it would hurt you to add another 1/2 quart if it gives you piece of mind.
Strange. While the complete fill is listed as about 8 quarts, not all the old oil usually drains out, so 8 quarts added on top of what remains may even yield an over-fill. When I last changed, I put in 7 quarts of new oil and the guage read into the next level from the top most bar (right where I wanted it). After driving the car for 30 miles and leaving it overnight, it read one level down the next morning. I added about 1/2 quart and that brought it back up to where I wanted it. It has remained there after 4000 miles. I wouldn't want to run it until it reached the bottom level because I want some safety margin. At the other extreme, someone on CC wants the level to always be at the very top line, but that's too close to over-fill for me. As I said, I want some safety margin.

Thanks. This makes sense to me & was my thinking. I know that the old oil was well drained because it was on the lift for an hour & had been run 50 miles to the dealer.
