We've replaced a couple sets of rads on the TT's and one 4S.

I'm still getting used to the 996, plus it's so clean and new that I'm afraid to but my foot into it.
Just picked up a 2002 996tt with 25,000km.
Just like when I bought my 930 I didn't drive one or compare before buying. Just bought it because I did lots of research. It's not as quiet as I was lead to believe from the internet. For now it's a pleasant drone from the exhaust and mechanical front end. Much quieter than a GTR for sure. I'm sure it's fast but my 930 feels a lot faster. Mind you the 930 is a 3.4, Euro spec, modded turbo with 964 turbo intercooler and new BB headers.
I did an oil, air and cabin filter change. 0W-40 oil quieted the motor valve train noise drastically.
Does anyone know what country code C38 is?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would like some GT2 front and rear bumper and Rear spoiler.
It is noisier than I expected and not as fast as I expected. Guess the 930 has spoiled me. The original Pirellis are 14 years old so they are hard and noisy.
Saying 14 years old out loud just shocked me. **** I need to do a lot of maintenance.
Already did the oil and air filter, 0W-40 Mobil 1 which quieted the motor substantially. The brake pedal feels like the original 930, like a piece of wood, so they need cleaning.
Next: brake hoses, spark plugs, fuel filter water pump transmission fluid change.
Finally finished the headers on the 930. I forgot the seal for turbo charger drain so it spewed all over the exhaust and smoked a lot. Sounds horny though.
Also did a oil change and ignition wire change on the E55. Wow big difference in engine engine noise and smooth idling.
The 996 is like new so it motivates me to clean up the other cars. The E55 has tonnes of dents and bumper damage, dash cracks etc. the 930 needs and professional paint job.

Congrats on the 996tt We have similar tastes as I have a 77 930 and an 02 996tt I did have a W211 E55 as well. My old 86 turbo had a 3.4 with k29, cams, B&B exhaust, headers and intercooler...
My long lost twin...;-). Actually I really wanted a W211 E55 but am afraid of the brake problems and a friend who has one marveled at how much more comfortable myW210 is. My 81-930 is almost the same specs apart from mine has stock cams and modded K27 turbo. Stashed around my neighborhood are my 86-951, 02-W210 E430 wagon 4matic and a 95-Volvo 960 wagon.
Clearly I have a problem.

Today I changed the spark plugs. Took me 3 hours to do the right side, 1 hour to do the left. Didnt need to remove anything. Just the heat shields, coils and plugs. That right side middle is the worst.
The plugs were rusty at their base and white at the tip of the electrodes. The engine ran so much smoother.
Next brake hoses!!
First rain and the wipers were so noisy. Sounded like scrapers not wipers. Bought some replacements only to discover the Porsche ones are a bit triangular rather than the standard square. Hurray I must order from the US. Tried to change the brake hoses only to realize my tools are too big for the inner rear connector. Off to the dealer!!

Thanks. I bought the tuneup parts from our host. I am debating whether or not to do the water pump. It's original. What do the experts say? I'm also afraid of the coolant pipe leak.

Just checking out whats going on in water world and i see rufrob putting your wet suit on and diving into a 996tt,congrats on her,how is she compared to your 930??

I'm like an amphibian. I started with a 944s, then the 930 now the hybrid. I'm still getting used to the 996, plus it's so clean and new that I'm afraid to but my foot into it. The tires are old so they are noisy so more road noise than the 930. The 930 just got BB headers which made it quieter than before. Reading a lot of reports that the 996tt was quiet, but in fact it's got a nice burble/drone. On the highway the 930 feels as if it would eat the 996tt because it's so visceral The 996 feels muted. I still drive it lightly because I'm afraid of coolant hoses and other known issues to leave me stranded. So once I do all the preventative maintenance I'll be more willing to beat it like a ginger stepchild.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hahaha, that great,i was lookin on the for sale thread and there is that red gt2,i would like to beat,i just dont have the 92g,oh well,i just going to stick with my 78 930 AIRCOOLED,besides we have a 20 year history...good luck on your new tt,its really nice
Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
I've never been against doing preventative maintenance, personally. So, if the coolant pipe and water pump are on your mind and it is something you can afford to do, I'd do it.
I will probably do it so I'll have to research to determine what parts I'll need. I plan to do it correctly by removing the engine, intake manifold and coolant manifold. JB weld and pin.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you'd like you can shoot me an PM with your email address and the last 7 digits of your vin. I can have one of our P car specialists email you a list of what parts you'll need and may also have input on how to do go about the repair.
I've decide to drive it like a stole it. At the very least put 5000km on it and watch for problems. Can't remember any Porsche that likes to be driven lightly.

Did the steel braided brake hoses today. Only the right rear was difficult. The rear spoiler light came on. I raised it cleaned it and put some silicone spray on it. Then no warning, for now. I noises some oil around the left ram. I'll try refilling it.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yup. Who need plastic face surgery when you have a 996tt? Oh dear was my gf and my response when we experience the tt at full chat. I could feel my cheeks and lips lift and pull back. The 930 is more analog and gives warning as to what's coming. But the 996tt is like a light switch. Let's call this shake down period because known issues are becoming known. Rear spoiler, turn signal, occasional coolant odor when exiting the car. I'll have to limit my repair budget to $500/month.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks. It's a result of a single minded purpose of saving money and owning cars way above my means. Tried to fix a leaking rear spoiler ram too yesterday. I manage to fill it but couldn't bleed it, so the leaky ram wouldn't move. My super old mechanic did it when I went to the bathroom and refuses to tell me how. If it keeps leaking. Fixed wing here we come. I think a 10cm bolt, with the same pitch as the banjo bolt should work a treat.

Found the limits of those old Pirellis!! On a long, lonely, wet stretch of highway at just over 2*^, she drifted across a lane, like it was possessed. It's tire time...

Happy New Year!! Coolant leak! Smelt coolant a lot after a short drive yesterday. Pulled the bumper to discover the top of the the right side rad is leaking.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The top of rad tabs that clamp to the plastic tank were noticeably more open than the ones on the left rad. I clamped them with some pliers. Test drove today, got on boost a few times. No smell. We shall see. I guess they will open again soon and rad-weld/ stop leak is not recommended.
The stop-leak seems to be working on the rear spoiler rams. I bit of a drip for a few days then it stopped. Nice and dry for a week now.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Oops. I spoke too quickly. Started to smell coolant again. I'll pull the bumper again to make sure it is the radiator and not something else. Any recommendation for radiator sources?
Another questions, has anyone tried the window regulator rebuild kit?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Pulled the front bumper today again.
Found a bit of residue at the base of the radiator. Cleaned it and ran the engine at 1 hour. Nothing. Not smell. Shut it off and see a wisp of steam rise from the fan area.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
We've replaced a couple sets of rads on the TT's and one 4S. We put in the CSF Rads, not sure if Pelican carries them but it's a shame they get covered by the bumper. Great quality and bolt up with no fuss. Your's should be 7053/7055/7056.
Talk about quantum entanglement. After 4 days something let go last night. Coolant pouring out of the right radiator area. I managed to get it home by stoping frequently and refilling the tank. Tonight I'll see where I screwed up. If I remember correctly seating the upper rad hose was really hard.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I looked at those CSF rads and I can't afford them now. If I get 3-5 years out to the oem ones I'll be happy. Funny I have owned 944s and 928s on and off since 1997 and have never replaced a radiator. Btw all of them were not well cared for. It is only a quality issue or is there a design flaw? Could grounding the rads help with corrosion?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yup. The overflow hose popped off. Looks like I put the clip on upside down. Didn't think it would have made such a difference. I yanked on it hard after reattaching and it didn't come out. So figures crossed.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My sister told me the same thing.
Btw, I though it was still leaking because of a coolant smell from the new rad and the level kept falling. Turned out the rad and AC condenser was full of coolant and the system was almost empty. It took about 10liters.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
LOL I just started reading your thread as an ex 930 (see sig) now AC cobra owner looking to get back into a P car. Seems we all share some common taste as I’ve also been tempered by a mates E55 AMG.
Still getting used to the 996. I'm saving money for the seemingly inevitable remaining radiators, tires, coolant hose pinning, water pump and rear spoiler.
I have done some search but couldn't find if anyone has grounded their radiators to slow or stop corrosion?
Has anyone tried those GT2 rear decks from EBay?
The E55 has impressed me with its outstanding reliability, versatility, and truly impressive performance. I know the newer AMG models are faster but definitely not cheaper to buy and maintain.

Pulled door panel today to see what's what with the window regulator. Found about 10mm play in the cable. I put a mini hose clamp at the regulator end behind the speaker. Done. Now it drops properly.

After "passing" a Prius vigorously , coolant leak again!! This time the upper rad hose. I'm really getting good at this. Now I repair without removing the front bumper. This time drained the system from the front rads and engine drains, and raised the back when refilling. Let's see how long this repair lasts.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have heard that the radiators are a "maintenance item" at $1500/set you'd think they'd last as well as 944 radiators. But no.
I wanted to add: once you have it sorted, drive it hard and you will notice the car "wakes up." It has 'learning ability' in the ECU and if the PO drove too gently, the car learned to underperform.
Hi y'all. Getting a clunking, something loose noise at the front end over small bumps like pothole covers and pebbles and cracks. Brakes not steering don't affect it. I checked that all the front gear is secured.
Any suggestions?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The only thing I found was one of the coolant pipe clamps was loose. Let's hope that was it.
Btw from the look of the the strut should be able to lowered into the hub carrier. Has anyone done this?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Anyone know a way to fix this?
Didn’t notice the right mirror was folded slightly hence I miss calculated and hit the right rear bumper.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Finally got around to doing to front strut bearings, bump stops and boots. They were stupid easy to do. With an impact gun I undid the strut top nut, popped out and wound down the spring, so low tension, pulled the piston down, swapped the parts. Total time 1hour both sides. So far, no more noise from front suspension. Then the headlights don’t come on.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Did that include paint repair? For example, I had my 987 front bumper repaired and repainted and it was $1200. Same car had someone reverse into it and dented the same bumper. Couldn't be repaired this time and the cost for a new bumper, paint and a right Xenon headlight was just under $5k.
Wow. Guess I got a good deal. Yes it included paint. I did the bumper re/re. Checked the fuses and relays and ordered a headlight switch. Here it cost $250.

Update on suspension knocking noise. Took the car on 2 long trips on the highway and country roads. First trip revived the knocking noise. Upon inspection I found the main pinch bolt 16mm for the left strut/knuckle was loose. Tighten it up. Noise gone. Yesterday back to the same area, the noise returned again but this time only on really rough country roads. On the highway and normal city roads no noise. Any ideas? Remember I changed both front strut bearings. But now the right one creaks like a old door hinge or bed spring when wet.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rufrob,
Can't help you with your knocking noise problem however I have enjoyed this tread. Please keep it updated as it's a great example of sorting out a 'new' car.
Well. Now the right window isn’t dropping down and the rear spoiler is leaking again. I ordered new brake pads of eBay. They arrived too small. Seller said they match US spec and the reason why they don’t fit mine is it’s ROW. Didn’t know there were different caliper sizes for standard steel rotors. Mine doesn’t have PCCB.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Brake pads sorted. Now the knocking noise from the front left is back. Intermittently. This leads me to think it’s the strut itself. Now to find a good used strut to swap.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Noise from the left front suspension is back. This time driving a while when the engine is hot. Gonna change the strut and see.

I loved these cars even more once I first got my hands on one. I also thought I would share some exhaust sounds with you guys. The beauty is that this one has a Tech-Art exhaust. How does it sound compared to stock ?
Cheers
Admittedly the stock muffler does its job too well. The burble at start is delicious but then it sounds like a vacuum cleaner when warmed up and on the move. After the GT2 deck lid and suspension is sorted I’ll look into the exhaust. The Techart sounds a bit droning I think. I would seek a Ruf piece if the car Gods will.
Speaking of suspension, I sources a new strut off EBay. It has a blue dot on it while the original has a red dot. Anyone knows what it means? So far so good. No noise.
