Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

AFAIK, it is now a custom order or dealer-installed option only.

But if it helps I'm now running the genuine P part after 7 months with an a.

Does anyone know if the same short shift kit can be used for both left hand and right hand drive caymans?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The pinch bolt through the bottom of the lever had come a little slack and just by nipping it up, solved the problem (It's now on my mates 996 targa) Obviously I'd by then already purchased the genuine one ....so on it went.
Does anyone know if the same short shift kit can be used for both left hand and right hand drive caymans?
I am thinking of getting one and I would hate to get one and find out that I can't use it.
By the way, my car is right hand drive.
Thanks
Coulb be. As there are only two cable connectors. The actual shifter doesn't do the gating. It just moves the cables. I had a shifter on the bench and examined it. It looked like it could work for either.
The question is: Is your shift pattern reversed?
USA:
R 2 3 5
1 4 6
Is yours the same? If not, I'm not sure.
similarly, us RHD folks cannot imagine shifting with the right hand as my left hand is too weak to control the steering during the shifts in casual driving. On the track, shouldn't be a problem since shifting is finished by the time braking is finished almost still on the straight.
Actually, I don't find a whole load of difference shifting with either hand. I have stayed in Singapore most of my life and got my license here. I have also spent 7 years living in the US and owned 3 manual cars when I was there. But all this is under normal driving conditions. I am sure I am better on one side if I put all this to the test.
AFAIK, it is now a custom order or dealer-installed option only. You won't find cars on the lot with it unless the dealer put it in after they got the car. Why it's not on the website, I don't know...

RHD wouldn't work here in the US for right-handed folks. I want my stronger hand between myself and any homicidal hitch-hikers I pick up. Then again, I guess in a RHD car, you can fight them off through the driver's window. Shooting at car-jackers across my body is a bit of a nuisance. Hmmm....
I may have to think about this more.
(Just helping to spread the "crazy-Americans" myth)
Haha.... The reputation of the US of A has never been that bad.
But keeping your stronger hand for your passenger next to you ain't a bad idea ...
Back to the SSK, is it true that I can either order a whole kit from Porsche to drop in the car or I can go with someone like B&M and just get the linkages?
I have read some of the past threads and I am a bit lost here.
Help.....
From my experience, they both work ok, just the Porsche one is more expensive as it is the complete console.
As the saying goes Yer pays yer money....... !!
But if it helps I'm now running the genuine P part after 7 months with an a. n. other. (just because it went a "bit tired and sloppy") but when i came to change it. The pinch bolt through the bottom of the lever had come a little slack and just by nipping it up, solved the problem (It's now on my mates 996 targa) Obviously I'd by then already purchased the genuine one ....so on it went.
Main difference from what I understand (I have the factory installed SSK when it was available from the factory on MY '06 cars) is that the Porsche one drops right in as a direct replacement, and if you don't like it, comes right back out. The B&M installation requires that the bushings be basically destroyed, so it's not a reversible mod without having to buy the Porsche parts again - so it's reversible, but very expensive to do so... most of our dealer sponsors have pretty good deals on the kit.

The standard shifter for the 997 is the same as the Cayman, and due to the heavy amount of short shifter mods, a 997 shifter can be found on Ebay really cheap sometimes. (There's none listed now though)
I bought one for about $25. Add to that a Schnell or B&M short shifter and you can get the job done for far less than the factory one plus installation. And the factory one is still ready to put back in if need be. Or you can sell it.
i got it.... :thanks:
thanks to all for clearing it up for me....
is there a way of replicating the shifting feel of the gt3 rs or that is just the regular porsche short shift kit?
i have the factory ssk installed and driven a lot in my friends GT3 RS, totally different. the RS seems even shorter and it has that "click" at the end....

It compares the throw lengths, and there are some major differences.
