The exhaust clamp fits over both parts and when tightened pulls them together and creates a seal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I lost my tail pipe last week on the way home from work. Wonder if I hit a pothole and the fixing was loose. Hopefully no major damage was done to other vehicles.. I've got a 996 C4S and the price of a new one (together with elbow pipe) is astronomical as you might expect. I've managed to source a pair 2nd hand but I could do with some advice about fixings. I've photographed the two ends that I need to connect (designtek silencer end and replacement tail pipe end). Does this look right? I note that the tail pipe end partially slides over the silencer end, should it go inside? Do you know what clamp I need to join these? Presumably this one (99611110800) although I'm not sure how it would provide a clamp without cracking the metal. I also need to find the bracket that the tail pipe hooks onto although I might be able to improvise this one. Thanks again, David

POST 2Original post

That looks about right, the exhaust tip part simply butts up to the 'cone' shaped part of the back box silencer. The exhaust clamp fits over both parts and when tightened pulls them together and creates a seal. I used hi temp grease to prevent future corrosion. It's a bit of a fiddle but does work.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great. Thanks for the reply, I've ordered the two items from Design 911 for £25. The clamp/bracket that the tail pipe needs to hang on is this I think: 99951108700 Still surprised that both managed to fail when I lost my old one! I wonder whether the bracket was missing (seems quite common) and then the silencer clamp failed causing the tail pipe etc to fall off..

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I wonder how much I need to torque the exhaust clamp before it cracks!?

POST 5Original post

Just nip it up loosely and you should be able to swivel the tip around to get it in the right position. You'll need to do this so that it doesn't look like your engine mounts are sagging and everything looks symmetrical at both sides. Once in correct position, just tighten it and try moving the tip. Once you can't move the tip by hand, leave it at that.

POST 7Original post

There is only 1 clamp on each tip, you have highlighted the cat clamp

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, Thanks. The tail pipe appears to hang onto this clamp though on the other side?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The L shaped hanging bracket is attached to the tail pipe end. It's apparently missing in lots of cases hence not everyone is aware of it I guess. see this 996 C4S - Correct tail pipe clamp - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums 996 Forum - 996 C4S - Correct tail pipe clamp - Hi all, My nearside tail pipe is rattling and I suspect the clamp has gone (if I put my foot on it, the rattle goes). POST 12Original post

After 20 years much of the exhaust has had it's day on these cars. My winter job is to change the exhaust manifolds and gaskets, then redo app the clamps and brackets. This will no doubt lead to a few snapped bolts and a jig plus drilling. A tailpipe falling off might be a bit gutting initially, but the remedy is at least straightforward!

POST 13Original post

Well you learn something everyday. My C4S has the brackets on the tailpipe extensions but I never knew that these were mean't to be clamped back onto the exhaust! I'll get some clamps and do mine ASAP.

You can lead a horse to water.............................. You seem to have highlighted 3 different cars in photos, not that easy for the correct answer Im afraid
