That is what I thought, but I watched several YouTube how to videos yesterday about changing the coffin arms an none of the videos showed the process of tightening the bolts in the 'on the road' position!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Our 2000 C4 is creaking from the front drivers side. I’ve ordered new lower coffin arms for the front axle. When I changed the wishbones on my Maserati Quattroporte it was suggested the I only fully tightened the hinge bolt/nut when the wheel was in final road position. I think that was to stop the bushing over flexing between the position when the car is raised off the ground and the normal operating position, if this makes sense? I’ll be changing them this weekend and wondered what other people had done?

POST 2Original post

That's correct, only tighten the bolt/nut the clamps it to the subframe when the car is in it's 'on the road' position. Pretty easy on the front as there's no adjustment on that bolt like there is on the rear.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your reply. That is what I thought, but I watched several YouTube how to videos yesterday about changing the coffin arms an none of the videos showed the process of tightening the bolts in the 'on the road' position!

POST 4Original post

You can measure the centre of the centre cap to the arch before you start. Then when doing the bolt up put a jack under the wheel carrier with the wheel off and jack it up until the distance between the two is the same. You don't ever want to tighten it with it not almost in position, the bush will then be twisted when you put it down on the ground to almost its maximum, it will only take a couple of bumps etc. to twist it to the point where it rips.

POST 5Original post

I recently changed the coffin arms and the rear toe arms due to the bushes being worn. The rear camber & toe eccentric bolts were also seized. I had to cut all the bolts for the coffin arms with an angle grinder but the bolts for the rear toe arms had to be cut with a reciprocating saw.
