Hi there,
I have a
987.2 Cayman S
which has been a really reliable car. Recently some light issues popped up.
The front lightbulbs both burned out one after another, not a big deal as it’s a simple bulb replacement. However, my rear taillight on the passenger side also is behaving oddly. It appears that it works fine with the lights off (DRL on), and with the low beams on. However, if I turn on the fog lights, the right portion of the light assembly does not flash when pressing the brake pedal. Please see photos.
Any ideas what might be causing this?? Does the taillight assembly need to be replaced, or is it something else?
Low beams on, no brake
Fog lights on, brake pedal on
Isn't the rear fog light only on the drivers side?

Rear fog lamp is on one side
Your fog light is operating properly. That is the way the fog light operates on my
987.2
. The left side is only illuminated.

It's a Euro "thing" guys. The European Spec Fiats had a red light on the left rear bumper that hung down and operated on it's own switch. At that time I was told it was for street parking and was a EU requirement. I think that's what it's for I could be wrong though..
Based on my research many years ago, the left side rear fog light, only, is so it's not confused with the application of brakes/lights. The parking light issue involves leaving the turn signal in an on position, either left or right, after parking the car and it will stay on to warn passing cars on the many very narrow European streets.
@sometrader
- Thanks for the clear list of symptoms and pictures; just following up here per this discussion and our PMs (especially if you decide you want the taillights I have for sale).
As both rear sets are working but only part of the right taillight is dead, I'm guessing that your right taillight may be defective (or a connection is to it, etc). Definitely more complicated as it's an LED system than 987.1 incandescents. If I couldn't quickly get it working, I personally would just pop in a right 987.2 taillight as my next step (which I happen to be selling as we both know), but I'm no expert here.
If both taillights were completely dead on both sides, that would likely have something to do with the rear control unit as I've seen before -- but that's not the case here. (I'll follow up via PM as well.) Again, just my guess and hope this helps.
Got it! Thanks for the insight!!
sometrader, your lights are working correctly for
987.2
model.
1. the standard config of the
987.2
is drivers side foglamp only.
2. without the rear fogs on, the brake lights are as per your picture (normal brake lights)
3. with the fogs on, the rear brake lights change to high intensity mode as per your picture
I have confirmed this on several
987.2
before -
cayman
and a
boxster
models both have the same behaviour.
hope that the smoke is steam or because of the cold - if it isn't you may need an
AOS
!
The high intensity left rear red fog lamp comes on when you pull the light switch on fog lamp setting , out two clicks. The rear fog indicator lights up at the dial. Push it in one click, the rear is off, the fronts stay on. This design is European design and use. I lived in Italy and am grateful to have it on my car here as well. Pretty cool.
Wanted to say a big YES to the reliable car comment. My MY10 CS is now at 202,000 miles.
