Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install noise went away, what a result' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check eurocarparts as they might actually supply genuine porsche pads' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Disks come off with 2 small M5 countersinks which you may need an impact driver to remove, caliper retaining bolts youll need a sturdy M10 i think hex bit and a long bar - probably best to replace due to age strain.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
right - I haven't had the front pads changed yet, but want to get them done soon. Where's the best place to buy them from? I've had a look at german, swedish & french...just not sure I'm looking at the right ones.
My car is a '99 (pre facelift) 996 C4
https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/results.asp
P64044 BRAKE PAD SET-FR TEXTAR 911(996) 3.4 Carrera 4 05/98> £49.90 not sure if they do sensors or caliper bolts? (are they needed?)
www.porscheshop.co.uk
Front Pads
£48.80
Caliper Bolt for Front Calipers ( 2 per side )
£2.90 * 4 = £11.60
Brake Pad Sensor Front
£9.80 *2= £19.60
Subtotal £80.00
VAT £14.00
Total £94.00
do I need anything else? I assume the pads fit into the existing calipers?
thanks in advance...
(I have posted this at the end of my warning light post, but thought it best as a new post)
stuff from GSF would be fine, they might have a choice of brands, so worth checking if you aren't going to use Porsche OEM
check Eurocarparts as they might actually supply Genuine Porsche Pads
You will also need pad sensors and new shims
Without trying to hijack the thread, this is the second time i come across the term "shims".
Doing a quick search, my initial assumption would be something about decreasing the noise, what exactly is their purpose?
Also keeping to the topic, my quote for replacing front brakes/disc/sensors came to ~£400 for the 03 C4 (porsche part). Is this the norm or is there an alternative viable option (with other brands etc)?
Cheers.
They dampen the vibration from the pads which reduces squeal etc. Should apply a thin layer of copper grease to the back of the pad between the shim too.
try brakes international on line. they are in bolton greater manchester but provide a great all round service and defo cheapest around.
i recently changed 4 discs pads sensors etc and saved a fortune with this lot.
very easy job as well, took around 30min per disc. used old shims with copper grease with no probs.
hope this helps.
I just want to pick up on the point made about copper grease. The shim actually sticks to the back of the brake pad, so putting grease here is not a good idea. Once the shim has stuck to the pad by all means apply a thin smear of copper grease as it will help to prevent brake squeal.
My brakes were very noisy, so when I took the pads out I found that no shims had been installed. Once fitted the noise went away, what a result!

Hi
Just changed the brakes on my C2
Changed front pads and disks, the vibration shims as above are stuck to the pad, use a thin blade to remove and re-apply to the new pads make sure they are the right way round though. Disks come off with 2 small M5 countersinks which you may need an impact driver to remove, caliper retaining bolts youll need a sturdy M10 i think hex bit and a long bar - probably best to replace due to age strain.
rear pads were the same
wear sensors hadnt worn through on mine, even though the brake wear light had come on so put the old ones back in - they just clip into place
got all the parts from GSF, the textar pads are the same as the porsche OE, but arent stamped up as porsche, same as the disks (common OE trick to retain margin) the whole lot came to about £240 - oh and a bottle of brake fluid, bleed the system through on all 4 corners, since the pistons had gone all the way back in best to remove the old and possible airated fluid
result - no squeel no vibration and after about 10 miles or so nicely bedded in - but be warned once done the brakes will very poor for that first 10 miles and almost non-existent when you pull off your drive.
as above, dont use any form of grease of slip lube near the pads or disks even if you use it on the wheel threads be very carefull!
Theres a set of instructions available (the porsche OE instruction manuals) if anyone wants them ill post the link
