Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So I'm getting ready to replace all 4 tires on my 2014 CS.

Do I have to then replace the whole sensor or can I just replace the little battery in them?

By the way, do you need to replace the valves when you replace the sensors?

Suggestion
The batteries have projected lifespan of 5-8 years, considering the labour cost to remove and reinstall tires, replacing the sensors as a set is the best advice.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have read that after a certain amount of years I will be getting the TPS warning because the batteries in the sensors are dead. Do I have to then replace the whole sensor or can I just replace the little battery in them?
So I'm getting ready to replace all 4 tires on my 2014 CS. The TPS units are new and 5 years old. Should I replace them while the tires are getting replaced?
I am not aware of any TPMS sensors that are designed with replaceable batteries, considering how they are sealed, any replacement of the battery will likely compromise the sensor as well therefore not recommended.

Considering the age of the sensors and the mounting cost of tires, personally I would replace the sensors at the time of tire installation, you could keep your fingers crossed that they continue to work, but you might be back to the tire shop and pulling the tires back off again if they start to act up or fail.
They vary in cost depending on brand, but I would budget around $70/ea for the OEM brand (Huf), although I have seen sets of less popular brands for 1/2 that.
I know that RIckyb asked for cost at an indy shop, but I just so happen to have had my
981
serviced this week. They said I will be needing TPMS at some point and quoted me $220 for each sensor, $49.39 for each valve, and $272 for labor. Total for 4: $1,449.21. Not getting them there. By the way, do you need to replace the valves when you replace the sensors?
oewheelsllc.com. I've bought several sets of TPMS sensors from them before and never had an issue. Last set for my other
cayman
was $165 for all 4... and the valves are part of the sensor, so it's disingenuous to charge for both IMO. Looking today, they are about $169 for OE Huf brand ones. Most tire shops charge around $20-$25 for mount/balance. While you should replace them when you do the tires just to make sure (which I forgot to do with my most recent tires...ugh), it should not cost anywhere near $1400 to do it after the fact; the prices you qouted are
insane
.
I'm still running my original sensors on my 2010 (~86000 miles). I'll wait until one dies before replacing since it isn't a show-stopper. I only preemptively replace things that would leave me stranded if they malfunction. TPMS would just be an annoyance. BTW, it isn't hard to replace your own if needed. Plenty of youtube vids.
I figured I'd replace the set with my
next
tire change but that might be a while. By then they'll be 10 yrs old.
BTW, Durametric will read the sensor battery condition and estimate its remaining life expectancy. Last time I checked (a couple yrs ago) it said greater than 1 yr.
the labor to install each sensor is $15-20 at a tire place (mount/balance), so you are looking at $60-80 savings if you replace them at the tire of tire swap. Some shops charge extra to replace the tpms in addition to the dismount/mounting/balance of tires, but my shop doesnt. So that depends how much longer your tpms can stay working...if they can last another 3 years i wouldnt replace them now. The tpms usually lasted 9 years in my experience (happened twice in past cars)
Thanks everyone for the input. I looked on
Amazon
and they have a set of 4 by Mobiltron for $98.50. Good feedback posted but you never know. Anyone had experience with this brand?
I live near Portlandia, Oregon and have a
2008 Cayman S
. In January a local tire store put a set of ITM 433 mhz sensors on my car. These are generic units that are programmed for your car and sent to you ready to go. The cost for four from
Amazon
was $151.22, including tax. ANT Tire, also known as Trackside Motorsports, installed them for $80. I was in and out of there in 20 minutes and the sensors began working correctly within two miles of the shop. These are still working fine 6 months later.
Mobiltron is a large manufacturer of TPMS in Europe, they make sensors for all sorts of vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trucks). I have one of their motorcycle kits on my
BMW
and I've been very happy with it.
