Well on a decent run i will get around 27 mpg which seems fairly realistic, but around town its much closer to 12 mpg which I think is a little shocking.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Right guys I have now had my 1998 996 C2 for just over a month and am completely over the moon with it and now have many jealous mates. How ever it's drinking fuel at an alarming rate around town and when the car is just on idle there is a really strong smell of fuel coming from the exhausts. So I'm assuming it is over fuelling, the question is why or what could be causing it? Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Andy

POST 2Original post

What do you get 20mpg or worse. My Commute (15 miles country roads average speed about 35mph) to work I see 22mpg. Long motorway drive cruise set at 75 - 28mpg

POST 3Original post

What sort of MPG are you getting? Does it improve when on a proper run? First step, get it along to a garage and have the emmissions analysed, maybe the MAF sensor is giving the engine the wrong reading, hence the mixture's wrong. Either way, get it looked at quick as unburned fuel in the exhaust will knacker the catalysts.

Well on a decent run i will get around 27 mpg which seems fairly realistic, but around town its much closer to 12 mpg which I think is a little shocking. My old man has an emmisions tester knocking around his garage some where, does anybody have a clue what sort of levels they should be at? Cheers Andy

POST 5Original post

12mpg is v. bad, that's not right at all. if you drive it normally around town and keep it below 4000rpm,you'll get about 20-21mpg worse case.

POST 6Original post

Could this be a MAF fault? Any problems accelerating?

POST 7Original post

Maybe the variocam activator? I'm surprised theres no Check Engine light showing. Get it checked out by a tech.

POST 8Original post

I commute every day, 50% of it through NW london, in my 996 and I average 26mpg
