Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

35 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hello my next car will prob be a 996. I want to get a Gen2 what's the easiest way to tell it's a Gen2? It seems I can't rely on the year, or even the shape of the headlights. When I search Autotrader or google images it's hard to tell exactly where the cut-off date is.... so what's a sure fire 100% sure way to be sure - are there tell tale numbers on the sticker under the bonnet? It's tricky (for me) at least to tell thanks

POST 2Original post

October 2001 (Model year 2002) was the cutoff and the head lights really should be the best way to tell (unless the entire front bumper and lights have been upgraded - can't be very common). Glove box is also a good tell, glass for the rear if a cab.3.6 engine in the spec is a giveaway.

POST 3Original post

The gen2 has cup holders 😜 Try this: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/legacy/clientftp/Register/996/faq_model_history.pdf

POST 4Original post

One looks like the GT1 beast, the other looks like Sally from Pixar Cars.[ ][ ][ ]

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks all. hope to get some kind of Gen2 996, but may I am keen on the c4s because of the 'turbo' body. But, if money is right a 996 Turbo, but my wife wants kitchen replaced first

POST 6Original post

Tell your wife you have seen sense and that you will be buying a 996 that will do 32 mpg and get that agreement in writing, then go buy your 996t.Travelling to Le Mans using every kph of the french speed limits I averaged 32 on the way down which included rather more town driving in Rouen and Le Mans "environs" than anticipated and all the shuffling off the shuttle.

POST 9Original post

Except the original GT1 had 993 headlights [8D]

POST 12Original post

Gen 1 996's originally came with a matching shirt. 😜

POST 13Original post

Very good chaps made me laugh first thing on a Sunday morning............

POST 14Original post

Yeah but you still wouldnt mess with Stefan even wearing that shirt!.

POST 15Original post

...oh, if only you'd be looking to distinguish between a gen 1/2 boxster, forget the mechanics, take a hairdresser with you.......

POST 16Original post

Had to get my wife a Gen 2 Boxster. Her reasoning was she needed a glovebox for her sunglasses and wine gums, and a cup holder for her Latte.

POST 17Original post

Stop, stop... " far too much fun being had in this tread"....LOL Love it.

POST 18Original post

Les, I bought some new Bulbs today. Weird because instead of coming in pairs they were by the dozen?.

POST 20Original post

If your Gen1 lights have a bit of a yellow glow to them, it's probably because they were corn fed and need upgrading to free range.

POST 21Original post

Gen 2 light will flash randomly at men wearing cycling shorts. This cannot be fixed.

POST 23Original post

The salesman assured me that as the lights didn't have any orange bits in them it must be a Gen 2. My wife has since put me right as it doesn't have a glovebox for her to put things in. I don't think Gen 1 or 2 matters as this is a fabulous car and since I bought it just over a year ago it really puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it. Only wish I'd spent less time thinking about it and taken the plunge and got one many years ago. [/IMG]

POST 24Original post

That's a great deal of help you don't sat Which is which!!!!!!

POST 25Original post

TOTALLY Agree with everything you say Gen 2 More powerful and a bit better equipped Cup Holders a must DEcided to sell my car and buy a Gen 2 Cant do without the cup holders

POST 26Original post

Slightly bigger on cc yes but not quicker!. Track times tend to be better in MK1's I think cant actually find the proof but I believe this is the case as its a lighter car. LOL look at the first comment here!

POST 27Original post

Power/Weight ratios here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=352051 Very little in it between Mk1 and Mk2.

POST 28Original post

Yeah, But Louie Spence don't travel light. Fastestlaps .com used to hold some vs track times of the 996 variants but there database does not seem to have it now. But lap times for Mk1's were generally a hair over the line.

POST 29Original post

Gen 2 are heavy because of all the stuff we keep in the glovebox. 😜 To be honest there is not a lot of difference between them, a couple of creature comforts , the gen2 has a bit more power lower in the rev range, has a better exhaust noise and produces better MPG. (I got this over a 50+ mile stretch of the m25 including the dartford crossing, normally I avarage 22mpg). The main difference for me is that I can tell it apart from my wife's Boxster at the front.

POST 30Original post

On your link the gen 2 is quicker on the vairano track, nearly a second quicker at 0-100, 2 tenths quicker at 0-62 and has a higher top speed...... Louis spence is faster than you think.

POST 31Original post

Les, Your wifes Boxter nearly looks like a proper 996[ ] I saw your post on mpg the other day and I must admit it does amaze me just how good the 996 is on fuel. My little work run about only does about 40mpg its crap and its a 1.2 Previous BMW's I've owned have had shocking MPG

POST 32Original post

My 996 is my work runabout. Done 600 miles so far this week. Was going to get a cheep car for work then thought: for around £5 a day in fuel I could take the Porsche..... Best £5 I ever spend.

POST 33Original post

...I'm pretty sure mine are battery type....12V, same as my travel hairdryer.....

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post
