I have no experience with these. I am looking for something portable I can carry in my Cayman and Truck for long drives. I have a Bluetooth headset, MP3 player, Laptop with Navigation, and a few other small gadgets that I like to be fully ready to use on those cross country trips.
1) Do these have the potential to mess up the electronics of the Cayman? These days I just do not know, I was told never to use modern cars to jump other cars because they can fry your electronics so I am just wanted to make sure.
2) Does anyone have any experience in this category and can recommend some specs for what I would need to have laptop and phone MP3 player running off it at the same time?
3) Anyone have any recommendation on what kind i should get? There seems to be a plethora of them on the market from 10 bucks to 200 bucks!

They are called inverters, and there are many out there. Some produce a square-wave AC, and are not satisfactory with many electrical and electronic devices. Do not buy one, although it is apt to be the cheapest. Then there are the modified sine-wave units, which will operate most things OK, but can be troublesome for some sensitive electronics. They are very common and usually of middle price. The full sine-wave units are the most expensive, but will run about anything. Inverters range from a hundred watts capacity to several kilowatts, with the latter being able to run microwaves, refrigerators, etc. Go to a West Marine catalogue and look up (in the Advisor index) How to Select a Marine Inverter. They have a number of units listed for sale, which will give you an idea of what you pay for what features.

It is a tad bulky but it does produce pure sine and has two outlets so I can run a laptop (with navigation on) and charge a MP3, Phone, or headset at the same time.
Thanks much for your help. I am going to keep looking some, but the price on this does not seem to bad. And i can move it from truck to car and back easily.
You can buy a 100 watt inverter for about $19 that is very small (about 2" x 2" x 3/4") and plugs into your cig lighter. It will do just fine for the things you mentioned. Look at an auto parts store.
