Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In the CS I set on a sticky pad up on the dash right under the antenna and it works...
Leading evidence: 'Set on a sticky pad up' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'easiest things' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check crutchfield' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
FM transmitters are probably the easiest things to use, but they also produce the weakest results.

Suggestion
By the way, I have been told that Alpine control heads, which have an iPod interface, can be used to replace the Porsche head, at least in non-Bose units.

Once in awhile I will have to change stations because of a little static, but all in all it works like a dream.

So far Dension has been less than forthcoming about their development progress, and has missed every deadline it set for itself in releasing this unit.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The dealer I am planning on purchasing from told me that at least in the 07s it will be possible to get an iPod integrated into the head unit (i.e. control it from the radio)...
Does anyone have any experience/knowledge about this?
Just a quick note to say that Dension is a joke of a company ... The ice>Link product has nice functionality, but forget about support from Dension.
I have the DICE unit in my M3 and it's pretty good, though I don't like the functionality as well as the ice>Link (but I pretty much only listen do one playlist that I update periodically, so it's not a big deal).
Anyway, just a quick half-rant.
OK, I'm stupid in this area.....and don't know all the options.....
I have seen one of those iPod ---> FM transmitter devices.....looked decent, and I know sound quality won't be truly excellent.....but do they work?
So in a nutshell what's the difference between DICE and Icelink+ ? I had Icelink in my M3 and now one in my MINI and they work great, displaying ID3 tags and all, ability to use either Ipod or Dension interfaces, etc. Sad to hear that DICE is a step back.
Both of my Icelinks were headunit hookup models, didn't have to do any level adjusting. The MINI was a breeze to install, getting the wiring stuffed back behind the M3's headunit was tough.
There seems to be a lot of variance in the quality of FM transmitters for iPod. I have an older iTrip that works fairly well in some vehicles, not as well in others. In the CS I set on a sticky pad up on the dash right under the antenna and it works... OK. Of course the sound quality isn't great with any of the transmitters, but the Cayman isn't a quiet car so it doesn't matter as much as it would in a Lexus. FM transmitters are probably the easiest things to use, but they also produce the weakest results.
I have a local shop that will install a unit to integrate an iPod but will not deal with Dension. This shop was referred to me by my Porsche dealer. I don't have the info here at work so I'll get it and follow up.
Atlas,
I got an FM transmitter from Radio Shack for about $30 and it works great. Once in awhile I will have to change stations because of a little static, but all in all it works like a dream.
Russ
I agree with DragonBreath and Russ. My iTrip sounds 'OK', not great, but even with CDs played in the head the sound is only fair, and if you are flogging the car, forget it. For my poor old tin ears the cheapest solution seems the most cost/effective. I know more particular audiophiles might not come to the same conclusion. By the way, I have been told that Alpine control heads, which have an iPod interface, can be used to replace the Porsche head, at least in non-Bose units. But building an frame adapter to match is a pricey proposition.

Is/Has anyone getting/gotten this?: (
Dension gateway 500
)
Looks promising. Have seen it online for $500 and it will support USB MP3's (players/sticks)
Just wondered if it will/would work well with 987's
Many people both here and in other forums have been waiting eagerly for the Dension unit to come out...for over a year now.
So far Dension has been less than forthcoming about their development progress, and has missed every deadline it set for itself in releasing this unit. Now that prototype units have apparently been released for testing, results have been less than stellar. I wouldn't hold your breath for this one.
I have an iTrip and find that it works OK when I put the iPod (with the iTrip) in the little cubbyhole ahead of the shifter. Between the noise of the CS, my own tin ears, and possibly my taste in music, it works out 'OK', but just OK. I am not impressed by the sound quality of the standard radio regardlees of source.

DLO Transpod
Well, here's what I've done..... The DLO Transpod. It charges while it plays, and it allows you to select any frequency from 88.1 to 107.6; you're not just limited to a few presets. It's kind of expensive for an FM transmitter ($100 at Best Buy), but it works pretty well. Sound reception in my A4 and my 987 Boxster are both pretty good. Equally as good as any strong FM channel would be. However, in the Boxster, there are no real good places to mount it. Right now I use it in the cigarette lighter, and it gets in the way a bit for any spirited driving. Does anyone know if this is bad for the car to have it plugged in the cigarette lighter? Manual says to only use the lighter for the air compressor
i was told by a friend who owns a stereo shop that it would typically cost about $800 to install ipod into the head unit, thats crazy.. i said NO WAY !!! i went with the FM transmiter. it works, although is not the best quality. but i feel much better with $800 in my pocket.
Jonesy,
I have the same one in my car, but remember you have 3 lighter sockets to choose from, the main one, the one in the center glove box and the one down by the passenger footwell. The unit also comes with the adjustable arm so I just try to adjust mine where it doesn't get in the way of driving, although at some point I may install a Dension unit.
K-Man, with the center glove box outlet, the Ipod sits too far back to see/change, and I've had a real hard time getting the adapter into the hole. The socket in the passanger side footwell is just way to far away for the Ipod too.... I know the dealer can do something for me four around $800, but you'd be crazy to spend three times as much as an Ipod itself just to be able to listen to it in your car
Bumperplugs has the Dension unit for sale on their website. They mention that it may not integrate well with the CDR24 radio. I could not find anymore info on the Dension site. I would like to hook in the Satellite radio too, and they say that this is possible.
The dension unit will work with the cdr24 but the current unit doesn't send forth id3 tags to the display, supposedly they're working on it. The unit does have an extra a\v in so you can easily add satelite radio. - SS
Anyone heard of or tried the "Drive+Play" unit by Harman Kardon?
My brother has one on his Subaru, and he loves it how it connectes directly with an IPOD display interface.

Wonder if it will work in our car.
Ummm Not directly. Did you read their site?

Requires either a jack we don't have, or the usual FM transmitter setup
If you will accept an FM transmitter solution then this would work, but there are plenty of those solutions around.
