I just installed a pcm2 in my cayman and its not playing mp3. everything else is working, i didnt go to the dealer to set it up, it just worked when i plugged it in. How do i make my mp3 cds play on it? is it broken??
Thanks!!
You got lucky, racer, you got a unit from a car equipped with the same audio options as yours. I think mp3 recognition has most to do with how the cd's are actually burned. It seems that other members on the board are having most luck with burning through itunes, once you go to the preferences and change the burn settings to mp3 cd. I highly doubt the unit is broken if it plays regular cd's and mp3 recognition definitley can't be a setting somewhere in the PIWIS. - SS
My PCM also immediately came on although I get the error that I have no Nav or Telephone installed, but i just need to shut that off in PIWIS when I get a chance to get on a PIWIS machine and get the proper codes. Playing MP3's or WMA's depends on how they are burned. I recommend WMA's, you get more per disk and in Windows VISTA it is super easy to build a CD just right.
How are you burning the MP3 files to CD? Did you examine the CD to verify that the files are indeed MP3 files and not converted to something else? What bit rate are the burned files? Can your PC play the CD?
yeah i am positive they are mp3 cd's i used to play them in my pioneer nav. i also burned another one through itunes, i changed the settings to mp3.. and still i put the cd in and it doesnt do anything or doesnt recognize the cd =( regular cd's play perfect.. it says no cd changer when i press the cd button, and when i press it again it says no single audio cd...
what can it be? maybe dirty cd reader?
Are the MP3 files in folders or all on the root directory of the CD? And since you installed the PCM in your Cayman after the fact, are you sure it is a PCM2.1 unit? PCM2 units did not decode MP3 files - to the best of my knowledge MP3 capability was a new feature in PCM2.1.
yup.. got mine off a 05 carrera, its a pcm 2.1, all the mp3s are in the root directory there are no folders..
thanks for trying to help, i appreciate it!
I only have folders in the root of my CD and it plays the MP3 files just fine! BTW, some 05 carreras did NOT have 2.1
will a non-PCM unit play mp3 CD's?
No. Only the PCM will decode MP3 and WMA files on CD.
Racer, I figured out your problem and it is mine too. Our PCM's were taken from 2005 Carrera's, they are (most probably) PN 997.642.141.02 FMH, and
shipped with PCM version 1 software on them originally
. PCM's that shipped with software 3.0 OR LATER have mp3 support, the part number stays the same, or becomes .03 FMH. While the tech can update the software to version 3, the unit still won't play mp3's because it lacks the hardware. He was unsure of the exact build date of when they started shipping with mp3 support.
I personally don't mind too much because I will be using Dension 500 to get ipod support, and since I got the unit for $600, I can't complain.
