This is not a probability of success.

EDIT : Notice that the earlier 996 tips , need the gearlever to be moved to manual side , before you can use the steeringwheel gearswitches.Like my own -99.The later ones ( can't recall when the change happened ) can be used manually from the switches without touching/moving the gearlever first.A big difference , if you want to play with gears yourself often.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, i'm looking for a 996 at the moment but have only driven a couple of manuals upto now, not against the idea of a tiptronic though. I don't want to start a which is better row but was wondering how much of a difference in perfomance the auto box makes in terms of real world driving??? (anyone got a link to some fiquares) Thanks Chris BTW I'm looking a 3.4s

POST 2Original post

The tip's figures are a few 10ths behind the manual car. However, an actual owner would be unlikely to replicate the manual's performance stats, assuming they like their clutch and gearbox! So in the real world, probably no difference. Indeed, a tippy would probably have the edge in the traffic light grandprix as you won't fluff a gearchange etc... The main difference is that the tippy is a 5 speed vs the manual's 6, which may mean that the manual car is able to better exploit the engines power when really pressing on.

POST 3Original post

Reality is you are not going to notice the difference. the Tip does have the advantage that you can plan your right foot and hang on for dear life with both hands as you tank slap your way down the road

POST 4Original post

I agree, and you don't have to keep forking out for new clutches!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies. Think i'll have to have a go in a tip if there is not much difference (the wife will be happy as she hated the clutch in my old Boxster )

POST 6Original post

Bought my 996 three months ago now and went for the Tip. drove the manual as well and could'nt really notice any difference in performance between the two as I'm not a racing driver. The advantage of the Tip for me was knowing the car probably was less likely to have been thrashed round a track than a manual. My missus also drives the car and loves the automatic gearbox. TB

POST 7Original post

Ditto comments, stats aside their won't be any noticable difference. Drive both and see what you prefer. I really enjoy the manual experience of the 911 however less so through heavy traffic.

POST 8Original post

Tiptronic is one of the best auto-shifters out there but the Manual 6-spd is also one of the best. I've had Audi's, BMW's, Lotus etc but have to say the manual box in a 996 is excellent and superior in feel to the aforementioned brands [of -the- particular models I've owned]. If it doesn't 'snick' into every gear then there's something wrong with it! For me it had to be a manual but that's because I like to be involved to a greater degree.

POST 9Original post

Just like to add, the 996 (and possibly 997) should be very easy to drive, i.e. light clutch action and a slick positive shift. A heavy clutch in a 996 indicates a knackered one due to the 'unusual' mechanical arrangement.

POST 10Original post

tip I have a tip , 99. Wife loves it ! I like it too. Altough I do know , manual is also superb and much more involving and rewarding.Drove it too before purchasing the tip.I would have bought manual myself, but wife said she wouldnt drive manuals... , as she never have. So went for the ttip.Havent regretted though. It is ,OH so simple to drive and enjoy.Just put it on D , and forget. And if you really want to get involved , flip the tip to manual side and use the switches on the steering wheel. But normally I just leave it at D , and drive it !

POST 11Original post

I bought a manual - it does seem a bit quicker when you're really pushing but the Tip is definitely an easier drive if you commute. Being an auto you are going to lose some hp and it is a tiny bit heavier.
