I replaced the crap unit with a spare Infinity speaker that I had, using Dynamat Extreme to increase the damping around that area.
Leading evidence: 'Replace crap unit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect door handle cabling, airbag etc and you're ready' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I replaced all the speakers in the car with MB Quart items (which are now in my GT3) which was the best improvement I made given that the Becker headunit isn't that bad a unit.

Damian, did you ever replace the door speakers or know anyone who has?

I had a 4S for over 3 years and on more than one occasion considered replacing the headunit, in the end the replacing of the headunit & amp really put me off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone let me have a wiring diagram for how the Porsche CDR23 on a 2004 C4S is wired to the amp and speakers for the 6 speaker version? :?:
I'm putting in a Kenwood 7200 - more problems than I had anticipated.
I'm not surprised especially with the AMP, even putting in a Becker trafic Pro was complicated due to the AMP wiring, there was no sound and the sound had to be fed from the AMP Wire.
I don't have a wiring diagram, OPC parts dept ?
I have one for a 99 C4 CDR 220 if it's any use. Email me if you need it.
It was a right pig changing the standard unit for an Alpine and going via the amp.
Plan to bypass the amp (of fit a much better one) and go directly to the speakers if you want better quality.
Still need to find better speakers too.
If only the newer cars stuck with the standard analogue leads it would be brilliant but no, they went with a new fangled fibre-optic connection to the amp.
The 4S has 'uprated' speakers if you can call it that, the Bose are marginally better than the standard, but a replacement is recommended.
Damian, are you saying whatever I do I can't use the amp?
My replacement kenwood 7200 has an in-built amp so it looks like I'll be forced to hard wire the speakers and bypass the porsche amp as suggested by Tim.
The only problem is that my new amp has only four powered outputs (4x50w). Any idea how I can drive the bass speakers in the door?
Ray
Exactly. I mentioned this in your last thread. Your ECU will also be logging faults at the same time, not too serious but you need to get an OPC or Indy to switch this off.
You can drive your bass units by 'splitting' the signal with a crossover. Take your front output and put it through a 2-way (or better still an active) crossover, low freq to the doors, mid/high, well actually the remainder to the front dash then you're sorted.
You are going to have to route the wiring from the headunit through the bulkhead anyway as the amp (and speaker wires) are in the spare-wheel well.
Personally I'd find a nice 4/6-channel amp and just route f/r RCA leads and remote switch-on from the 7200 to this. Snip the leads off the existing amp and connect them up.
Do you have a Bose amp in the 4S?
Damian, yes I'm coming to the same conclusion its either crossovers or a new amp which is a shame as the kenwood has 200w.
Do you know of any suitable crossovers or amps, I guess my decision will come down to price and ease of installation.
My amp is not bose.
thanks for your advice, how do you know about all this stuff?
Ray
Hi Ray,
I had a 4S for over 3 years and on more than one occasion considered replacing the headunit, in the end the replacing of the headunit & amp really put me off. I replaced all the speakers in the car with MB Quart items (which are now in my GT3) which was the best improvement I made given that the Becker headunit isn't that bad a unit.
You could just simply leave the amp in place and rewire the speakers to connect directly to the 7200, the dash and rears are easy to rewire given that they are internal. The door units might need a little work ie. isolating the relevant cables going to the doors and splicing into them the dash speaker wiring via a crossover. This crossover is actually quite basic just requiring an inductor, the existing speakers have a 'simple' crossover wired in place (well a small capacitor) but your best bet is to have a chat to a Car Hifi dealer and see what they can come up with.
Damian
Yes I did. Just remember to have plenty replacement door trim studs and research where the Torx screws are and exactly where to pry the trim sections off. Once this is done the door panel is remove with a short, sharp upward movement. Disconnect the door handle cabling, airbag etc and you're ready!!!!!
The door bass unit has a 13cm unit mounted, however most replacement units are just that little bit 'meatier' and the bass wave guide might need to be trimmed around the mounting hole to fit. I replaced the crap unit with a spare Infinity speaker that I had, using Dynamat Extreme to increase the damping around that area.
 Yes Damian, I will be getting a specialist to do the install but I want them to 'go for it' rather than spend a couple of hours figuring out what to do. The cross-over route is the one to take, I'm hoping google will help me find some which are suitable. I'll let you know how it all works ou 0-hopefully the week after next.
cheers Ray
Do you think the door speaker could be used as a 'main' speaker, instead of the 10cm one in thedash?
I'm not sure how this is wired up but get the feeling not much goes to the door unit at present.
