At this point it is not news that most modern
Porsche
steering wheels (991, etc) will physically fit in earlier models (987, etc). Also, most folks know that there is a product called the
GPS
(German Performance Service) adapter,
https://gpsadapter.us
, that most of the 991.1 folks use to enable the multifunction and/or heating function of a 991.2 steering wheel. Here is a link to the "mother" thread for the retrofit:
https://********.com/forums/991/9943...a-991-1-a.html
However, the multifunction controls are enabled to control the stock PCM (e.g. PCM 3.1 in 991.1). I upgraded my 2014 C2S 991.1 non-multifunction, non-heated steering wheel to the 991.2 MF, heated steering wheel by replacing the steering control module, the clock spring, installing the GPS adapter, and having the dealership code it. It works great and controls the PCM just as nature intended.
So why am I posting this in this forum? Well, I then attempted something similar with my 2006 Cayman S 987.1. The 987.1 had the sport steering wheel, no-multifunction, and no heat. Notably I had already replaced the ancient PCM 2.1 with a Kenwood touchscreen head unit and I imagine most everyone has dumped the PCM at this point. The guy who designed the GPS adapter indicated to me that, while heat isn't really capable of being retrofitted on the 987.1/997.1, that volume up/down could be activated. Those of you who have done this upgrade will realize that buying a new steering wheel, airbag, steering wheel control module, and paying for programming is a tad expensive if the only result is volume control.
So I decided to experiment. There is a device called the Paser Unican Plus.
https://automotive.paser.it/en-gb/St...p81c62c63.html
The Unican Plus is designed to allow someone that has a car that came from the factory with a multifunction steering wheel to to retain those multifunction steering wheel controls when replacing the factory head unit.
So here was the working theory, swap steering control module, swap clockspring for giggles (only really necessary if trying to get heat working I think), install GPS adapter into new 991.2 MF steering wheel, get programming done. At that point, the GPS adapter should be dumping the multifunction command signals onto the bus at which point the Unican Plus should intercept the signals and relay them to the aftermarket head unit.
The result? It worked! Volume control, next/prev song, mute, input switch, phone buttons. The only thing that didn't work, as you might expect, was the "back" button which clears messages and helps navigate car menus and the diamond "joker" key which is configured through the car system. I got a question to the Paser rep in the US about whether those two buttons could be individually programmed and he indicated that they could not.
SO, the moral of this story is, if you have an aftermarket head unit, in theory, you too can upgrade to the the 991.2 (or panamera, or macan, or w/e) MF steering wheel even if you have an aftermarket head unit if you throw a Unican Plus into the mix.
My main tip in this for 987.1/997.1 folks is get the used steering control module first, before you buy anything else. They are darn near unobtanium.
i would like to swap the OEM with the new steering wheel without MF nor heated on my 2008
987.1
Base
I assume there is separate wiring that is needed for the new airbag.
is there an adapter needed for the new steering wheel?
would you mind list the parts and where you bought them?
thanks
The new airbag wiring will come with the steering wheel. There is no physical adapter needed to make the steering wheel fit but you need the
GPS
adapter to get the steering wheel commands onto the bus. Also, note my car has the
Bose
audio system.
Here's the parts I used, but you should confirm with the folks at
GPS
with regard to your specific setup:
steering control module - 997.613.289.01 (check eBay, forum classifieds, and dismantler websites, you want to find this part first as it is hard to find)
clock spring - 955.652.211.21 (i don't think this is necessary to replace for MF, I was originally going to try to get heat to work which would have required this part)
GPS adapter -
STMV1/STMV1-H1. Without heating support / 1. Multifunction without heating / 2. Carrera 997.2(2009-2012)
MF steering wheel -
Steering Wheel - GT Sport Leather - Multifunction
(this is the link to the manual steering wheel)
airbag - eBay (
PORSCHE 911 TURBO 718 PANAMERA CAYENNE MACAN STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG | eBay
)
Paser Unican Plus -

This thread is amazing for those of us willing to drop big dollars on this beneficial upgrade.
Thank you for doing all the legwork!

Good info browncf! I am gathering parts to make the swap on my
987.2 Cayman
(originally multifunction non-heated button
PDK steering wheel
) to the
Macan
wheel.
I too have an aftermarket head unit. I watched Jim Wong's install (
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxGI5hhHk3k
), and noticed he has an aftermarket head unit as well.
He got it to work without the Paser Unican Plus. I am wondering if its really needed?
Hmm not sure. It looks like his original steering wheel already had multifunction controls so it’s likely he already had a Unican or some other canbus adapter of some sort to send commands to his aftermarket HU and just didn’t mention it in the video.
I asked him, indeed he has a MOST unit in there.
"Jim, did you need to install any additional control units for your multifunction controls to work with the aftermarket head unit? Like a Paser or something?"
Well you do need a MOST adapter in order for the aftermarket unit to work with the factory Bose system and the aftermarket head unit has the multifunction wire connected to the MOST adapter. This is because the factory Bose system uses a fiber optic system. This (MOST H.U.R.) adapter is pricey but you can probably find cheaper alternatives nowadays. But I didn't use or need any other adapters like iDatalink Maestro steering wheel adapter, etc.
"My 987.2 Cayman has a basic (non-Bose) system. So I didn’t need any adapters to make my Kenwood work. I am wondering in your case, what enables the steering wheel multifunction commands control your Kenwood unit."
My Kenwood aftermarket head unit has a steering wheel multifunction output wire which connects to my H.U.R. MOST adapter. The 991 steering wheel also requires the STMV1 adapter from
gpsadapter.us
. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the non Bose setup though I imagine it would be simpler than with it.
Hi, just joined in order to post here since I am in the middle of attempting this in my
997.1
without
Bose
and multifunction. I have had a
Pioneer
w8400NEX in there for about 3 years, and now am upgrading to a 991.2 steering wheel with multifunction. I got the
997.2
steering control module, the STMV-1, and used Paser Unican Plus. The steering wheel lights up and I am able to PROGRAM the Paser just fine (reacts to the volume and seek clickwheels, each single click corresponds to a choice change on the Paser). However, once I choose
Pioneer
, I have to spin the clickwheel lots of times for it to register. This is weird because I do not have to do that during setup of the Paser. Does your Paser respond well when controlling the head unit? Maybe I got a dud off ebay...
That is weird. I don’t have that issue at all. Everything powers up and the steering wheel controls are immediately responsive.
@ seewong did you close out your issue?
@ browncf .. saw your post history. crazy you've owned your car for so long. where'd you buy the unican? if you bought through unican's italian website, did you actually provide your ssn as it forces you to register prior to purchase. and any import fees? was it easy to program (as in, just wire/solder everything, turn on car, and it auto programs on its own?)
all - regarding steering wheel controls: i am upgrading my android head unit (from china/
aliexpress
) to
sony
. i have the
macan
steering wheel, with the
gps
adapter, and the steering wheel control module from
9x7.2
. all steering wheel controls (INCLUDING joker, back) can be detected and programmed by the android head unit. no luck on
sony
.
hence my post to confirm/scope whether paser unican can work.
