I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I'm looking for some steering wheel help!
I have a 2006
Cayman
987.1
with the old triangle style steering wheel. I have replaced it with a newer one 991 347 803 13 A34. This is a multi-function and tiptronic wheel but my car is not MF and manual ! I'm not bothered about getting the MF working. Once it was installed the horn didn’t work and the airbag light was on.
I took it my local iindependent
Porsche
guys at the weekend. They coded the steering wheel to multi function and the horn worked ! However, the car won't detect the airbag. He said it's either faulty (which it isn’t) or the car won't detect it because the resistance is too low as it came from a newer car.
Anyone any ideas why the car won’t detect the airbag and possible solutions ?
Possibly too new of a jump per the steering wheel for the
987.1
, but worth emailing this person for a solution:
gpsadapter
Also, check the airbag connections (but surely you've done that already).
Cheering you on here; let us know how it goes!
Thanks for the response !
Yes I contacted them and Paul told me "Airbag, shift button/peddles and horn are straight connected, don’t need adapter. The gpsadapter can’t support new steering wheel before 2015, this 991.1 style steering wheel don’t need adapter."
My
next
check is to remove the airbag again and double-check the connectors, but I'm sure they're ok. I'm waiting for the
iCarsoft
scanner to arrive and then I can try to reset the warning. I just wondered if there's some other issue with compatability
Ummmm.... exactly what warning message leads you to believe the airbag is the problem? If the battery was left connected while the airbag was disconnected and the ignition was switched on, there will be an SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) warning on the dash. This warning can ONLY be turned off using a diagnostics tool that knows how to speak Porsche.
Just sayin' - sometimes it is the simple stuff..
OK - sounds good. I just thought I'd mention it since I know people who that has caught out.. I'm guessing the "new" steering wheel and airbag are actually used? You mentioned "it came from a newer car" - do you have any history on why that steering wheel and airbag were available? Was the car wrecked? If so - was it a front-end wreck? Might it have been a dud airbag that failed to fire? It's probably a bit of a challenge to test an airbag since the test would probably be a destructive one.
Hi Don - I bought it from eBay but spoke to the guy. He had taken it off a
Boxster
981
and it was fully working, He has changed his to a newer version from a 997, but he's also having trouble with the airbag light !
One thought - if you still have your original airbag off your old wheel, and the wiring is long enough to reach it - it might be worth plugging it into the new wheel's wiring. If the SRS light still lights up to me that would mean a wiring issue or incompatibility of some sort. If the SRS light didn't light up - that to me would mean the wiring is fine, you can concentrate on compatibility or a bad airbag.
DO make sure to disconnect the battery before doing the swap of wiring. And reconnect it with the key out of the ignition.
Most likely issue with harness (inside the steering wheel). You may also need a newer steering control module. That horseshoe shaped part that sits behind the clockspring in the column.
And if I was you, I would look for a proper steering wheel for your car, meaning no
PDK
buttons and no MF controls.
