Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Please, help Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, 2002, 28,000 miles, Full Porsche Service history. No Warranty or Extended warranty No history of Engine work, Car in perfect condition Serviced 3,000 miles ago OPC Fault Report: Engine in ruins due to a bolt giving-way.(what the hell does that mean) Reckon Manufacturer fault. Porsche Response: 80% of parts cost, 50% labour, 2.5yers warranty, full engine replacement, on Engine part-Exchange basis On the bright side, I still got a 911 Carrera 4S(without an engine), Engine is only one of the 1000s of parts that make up a car and I haven't been struck off the Porsche owners list or 911uk yet. Is the Porsche offer a fair deal?

POST 2Original post

Porsche pay 80% of the parts you pay 50% labour? I'd be gratefull without their goodwill it would be a £10K Bill

POST 3Original post

Sorry to hear this News Lloyd, Welcome to 911uk. Porsche, I would think will not put any more money in.. Take the offer, Keep the car as a nice new engine will be in her. Dan

POST 4Original post

Not that I have experience with these things but if I was driving a 2002 car with no warranty I would be bloody happy with that offer!

POST 5Original post

Sorry to hear about this, it never good news to know of someone experiencing an intermediate shaft failure. Porsche's offer sounds fair, but one question how long have you had the car and when was it last in warranty?

POST 6Original post

Surely you NEED to know what "Engine in ruins due to a bolt giving-way" means!! What are we talking about? catastrophic mechanical engine failure as in dreadful noises, smoke and a pool of oil on the road? If your engine is toast then the OPC offer sounds reasonable but if it isn't ....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Reply to Damian: Had this car since June 2006, had a 110 check done by Porsche, Didn't really think I needed an Extend warranty for a low mileage 911. Certainly learnt my lessons.

POST 8Original post

Re: Reply to Damian: *****, so sorry mate. It is a rare occurrence but that doesn't help you. Fingers-crossed for a speedy installation and a return to the road for both of you

POST 9Original post

Re: Reply to Damian: Sorry for being flipant, but the 1 point they missed off the 111 point check could have been the engine bolt. Sounds like not a bad offer... take any goodwill you can get.

POST 10Original post

Sounds like a fair offer to me, all things considered, but galling nonetheless. Any idea what the cost to you will be?

POST 11Original post

take the offer and run,no other manufacturer would have made such a goodwill gesture when they have finished take the extended warranty, i just had the same thing on a merc sl 1 month out of warranty always serviced at merc main dealers only 30k miles, mercs answer your on your own mate

POST 12Original post

sorry to hear your situation, but as others have said, that sounds a very good offer, in fact i'm sure i have read other stories where they have offered much less. Make sure you get an extended warranty when you have your new engine and enjoy worry free motoring after that.

POST 13Original post

Sorry to hear about this - There's so many horror stories about this engine - but that said, perhaps it is a rare situation considering the amount of units out there. In my opinion it is unacceptable that a £70,000 car needs a new engine after 26000 miles... The fact that they have offered such a generous award is surely admission of a known fault with the M96/01 engines- However in the circumstances - I would take what they offer BUT also in the meantime talk to a solicitor. There is lot's of material to support your case - Suppose that's why Porsche didn't use this engine for the base of the M96/76-70 Unit for the 996 GT3 & tt ---- NOT STRONG ENOUGH - (Another plus point for buying GT3/tt over C4S...) Note that 50% off labor is still about £60/hr wonder what the technicians get paid. Read with extreme diligence the warranty as I have a friend who had OPC extended warranty on 996 tt bought from a dealer. He had failed N/S elctric window they claimed that only the linkage was covered NOT the motor !! hence a £200 bill, on top of £800 ' insurance ' There are Independent options, but probably at a higher cost --- particularly Autofarm. http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines Good luck..
