So I've always hated the stock

steering wheels. Even up to the current

ones that can be retrofitted into the 987/997 are not that great. They look nice, but the actual shape of the wheel and the grip were both disappointing when I saw them in person. Not to mention the price of one of these wheels + new airbag (even used on eBay) is not worth it.
So one day I was looking at just getting a Momo Monte Carlo aftermarket wheel. For those of you that remember, this was the classic wheel with an amazing grip and contour. When I looked at the adapter partnumber, it said it fit not only 987 and 997s, but it also fit Audi A4's from 1995-1999, and VW's from 2005-2011 and Audi TTs Mk2's.
I started looking at a whole bunch of wheels from these cars to see which ones were dual stage vs single stage and realized that, although the wiring is different, the actual wheel will fit from an Audi A4 1995-2016 including S4/A5/S5 variants, as well as VWs from 2005-2016. The key was finding a nice looking one that had the dual stage airbag to make a simple splice from the 987's harness.
I ended up finding a VW GTI Mk5 wheel + airbag locally for $150 Cdn. The buttons don't work and neither do the shifters, but the horn does. There was some minor clearancing I had to do on the aluminum portion (think drilling out an oblong hole).
And here's what I ended up with:
So for all of you Porsche purists out there, this wheel is amazing. And I'll be making a replacement porsche crest for the airbag cover (3D printed and then wrapped in vinyl). But for now, it works!
Flame away! But for those of you looking for a cheap, very functional alternative, I've never seen anyone doing this anywhere so I thought this would be a good PSA (works for 997s as well!).
Feeling inspired, it's way past time those CF buckets get retrofitted, figuring out the mounts now.
Haha, hey if you like that wheel in your car go for it, it's your car and as of today you have creative license with it. Besides, the good Doctor liked Herbie too.
I think a pretty reasonable upgrade is to have the OEM wheel redone- I did mine in perforated leather with real carbon fiber and 12 o clock stripe to match exterior color. Alcantara is also an option. They also flatten the bottom for a better look. It’s still a bit big, but the the added thumb grips feel and work great. It’s OEM so no issues with airbag, etc. also, purist should be OK with this. All for under $600.

Ideally would have liked to do something similar, but the allocated funds on this project are going to the EV conversion.
Total cost so far on this steering wheel mod for me (including the new black version of the 3D printed badge): $150.75 Cdn..... Yes I know most of you think this is a joke, but for me, it's good enough cosmetically and best return for an upgrade to the feel and fit of the wheel.
The only way to get real carbon fiber, Alcantara or Leather, all for that price is China! I got it from eBay, you can Choose any color center stripe, type of grip, etc and they will make it and ship to you. They are made from Genuine

997/987 steering wheel ( good used steering wheel). They are stripped and redone to your liking. Easy to install, just use your OEM air bag. Plus, you get to keep your steering wheel so easy to go back. I have a friend who’s a composite master, he could not believe the workmanship as the carbon fiber is just flawless! Performance shops sell these for 2-3k, wonder where they get them from 🤣
