Jona, I dont know how long you have been looking, how much you know about 911's etc, all I can say is that its a buyers market, lots of folk starting to have some painful mortgage replayements now and tightening their belts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I have the chance to purchase a 2001 996 Carrera with 60, 000 miles. It is in Lapis blue with dark blue leather and GT3 Wheels. The car is absolutely mint but was a cat D write off in 2005. According to the current owner, the car was front panel damage. It does still have it`s original bonnet. The price is 20K Could I have your thoughts please gentlemen

POST 2Original post

Hello... and welcome to the mad house. please bring your own straight jacket. Lapis is a gorgeous colour IMHO. best advice on buying any porsche though is get it inspected!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Nicola and please excuse my sexism by saying "gentlemen" in my opener ! Do you think it a fair price for the year of the vehicle with the cat D ??

POST 4Original post

^^^what Nic said. Hi JONA Original bonnet...wasn't my biggest concern when I bought mine, its whats underneath. Theres plenty of decent 996's just over 20k that haven't been written off.

POST 5Original post

If it is a Cat D there must be some documentation somewhere describing the reason for it being written off? Does the current owner have anything like that? Or do you know where the car was taken after the accident? Anyway, welcome - and as Nic says, worth shelling out £300 or so for a proper PPI rather than make several £000 mistake! I think that colour looks great with the GT3 wheels by the way - hasn't someone else recently posted a pic of a very similar car?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi. Yeh, I just meant it can`t have been too bad to keep the original panel. The car is very nice with the current owner being very meticulous. I realise there are plenty out there but not necessarily on a 2001 for that kind of money

POST 7Original post

Sorry just being flippant, but actually you could do a lot of damage e.g. to the chassis and underneath that wouldn't have disturbed the bonnet. Is 2001 pre-facelift? If you are planning on keeping teh car a long time and of course it comes through on an expert inspection then ok, but how confident would you be selling the car on? Not scaremongering just that 4 figure bills hurt, and can you afford lose £000's come resale?

POST 8Original post

Ill let you off... but , if the car has had damage, get a Porsche specialist take a fine toothcombe over it.

POST 9Original post

Jona Any Cat D would have had serious damage, you need to see pics before, the fact it has has the original panel means nothing. The nature in which the current owner maintains the car is good but means very little to a Cat D car, which needs to be priced accordinghly. regards

POST 10Original post

buyer beware, cat d or c or x,ther is no hard and fast rule as to the extent of damage it is catagorised according to the greed of the original ins co example in my yard now we have a 2007 vehicle booked at 32k been in water ever so slightly only thing wrong with the car is the radio cd doesnt work because the amp is under drivers seat, replaced amp valeted properly indistiguishable from any other running and driving perfectly catd case 2 2007 vehicle exactly the same just a different colour hit down both sides needs 2 sills 2 b posts 4 doors a wing roof gone slightly seat airbags, dash airbag cat d in my opinion it was cat b break only but because of the ins co greed on trying to recoup as much money as possible only a cat d. there are no hard and fast rules EYES WIDE OPEN TIME do not believe what a seller tells you have it checked out by some one who knows what to look for then make a bid on that premise and dont by it because its a porsche 1000s of them out there and quite a few that have been totalled and not on hpi alert register.CAVEAT EMPTOR.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the comments guys. I know it may be hard for the resale and a lot of people are put off by the fact but at £20K for a 2001 I think it a fair price compared to one not on the register, that may have also been damaged in its life. Do you not think ?

POST 12Original post

Welcome. Amd others have said PPI PPI PPI PPI - may save you thousands down the line.............

Jona, I dont know how long you have been looking, how much you know about 911's etc, all I can say is that its a buyers market, lots of folk starting to have some painful mortgage replayements now and tightening their belts. I would get a thorough understanding of whats out there, make a few cheeky offers even and you might be surprised. All IMHO.

POST 14Original post

OK Chris I'll offer you £50 for your car  Serioulsy Jona, Chris makes sense, do lots of research, look at and drive a few if you haven't already and then you'll make a well informed decision and get the car that is right for you.

POST 15Original post

Only relevant to 996's I'm afraid, 993's are too rare and as everyone knows its not just the build thats rock solid!
