Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I felt the car 'tracked' any imperfections in the road surface quite badly so decided (thanks to info from this site) to have a geo check done.

The geo was done by a highly recommended local independent in Edinburgh.

He suggested I make a post to see if the manufacturers recommended settings are the best for the car (?!).

I did this last time, as I had to change all 4 as I couldn't get rears to match the 10,000 mile fronts: Didn't get a massive amount back, but it made me feel better!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Changed them to MPSs and that cured it almost completely.
Hello all
I joined the forum around August & found it very useful while looking to make the move from a Boxster S.
I am now a very proud owner of a 996 C4 2001.
I felt the car 'tracked' any imperfections in the road surface quite badly so decided (thanks to info from this site) to have a geo check done. This improved the handling a lot, but I still find the car follows any ruts quite badly.
The geo was done by a highly recommended local independent in Edinburgh. He suggested I make a post to see if the manufacturers recommended settings are the best for the car (?!).
Tyres are continentals all round - although the rears are close to needing replaced (& I did notice they don't bear the 'N' rating).
Any help advice appreciated.
Cheers, Adam.
I'd start with a new set of boots all round (michelin PS2) and see how it feels after that.
OE geo settings should be spot-on for road use.
Welcome BTW, nice car!
Sorry, I misunderstood- you could get 2 rears then.
Other things that might cause the prob- track rod ends? Your tech should be able to spot any wear on the steering/front suspension. How many miles has she done?
To be fair, they are prone to tramline a bit on ropey road surfaces.
Yep, you will screw your centre coupling otherwise, so you need the same tread pattern on all four wheels.
If your fronts are new, worth asking if the tyre fitter will take them in part-exchange (they then sell them as part worn tyres). I did this last time, as I had to change all 4 as I couldn't get rears to match the 10,000 mile fronts: Didn't get a massive amount back, but it made me feel better!
I also have Contis at the moment, and have to say they get very noisy and harsh when worn! Apparently they have much stiffer sidewalls than most - to improve cornering stability - but this compromises ride quality, especially when worn (I have about 3mm left at the rear)
Tempted to try Michelins myself, but will have the same problem as you if I do it next time, so may have to go with Contis at the rear again: They do grip really well though, and the handling and feedback is brilliant.

I had a very similar problem with my 2004 C4S that I bought this summer. Not only that, the brakes were squeeking!
I took the new front break pads off and discovered that there were no shims installed.
With shims installed the brake
s are quiet and the road holding and steering balance are 1000% better. Might be worth hecking this out.
Newbie myself.
I had Contis on my Targa when I bought it and ound that they did track a lot. Changed them to MPSs and that cured it almost completely. What you have to bear in mind is that they are very wide tyres and will, to a certain extent, follow the contours.
Thank you all.
Had a decent run in the car at the weekend and it feels far from being 'planted'. Find it very difficult to make decent progress on B roads which this car should devour!
Am going to order 4 Michelins I think, but also put it back into the mechanic to make a few more checks.
