Since the engine has 50K, told the shop to go ahead and replace the IMS.

Never had any problems, every oil change was clean and run the magnet, never any hints of an issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yep, one more IMS bearing story. Just took my 2001 996 Cabrio to the shop, clutch was going fast. Since the engine has 50K, told the shop to go ahead and replace the IMS. Never had any problems, every oil change was clean and run the magnet, never any hints of an issue. My DD, and I drive it like it's stolen!
Well, here's the old IMS. Dumont's in OKC, (great shop, good people, highly recommend) stated I was possibly the luckiest man in the city. Luckily, no metal shards appear to have gotten loose. Several oil changes and checks showed no additional metal. If you look close at the photo, you can see metal around the top ring. The small jar contains the shards removed. Only explanation is that is was just about to grenade the engine when I took it in.
Been running it hard for several days, no issues with new IMS bearing. Keeping my fingers crossed!
What are the years with this IMS bearing problem? I just purchased a 2006 Carrera S with 50K miles. As I have no history other than carfaxs, is it worth having it checked out?
Thanks,
Robert Faust
I recommend you look at the PCA videos with Jake Raby of LN Engineering explaining what the IMS bearing is and the phases of failure. Next, find a good, reliable independent Porsche shop and have them inspect the IMS at your next oil change. It's well worth the money for the peace of mind. Be prepared to replace the part with new bearing or other fix. This board has a ton of info on the IMS issue. It sucks that inspection is the only way to know about your car unless you have detailed service information and even then you're rolling the dice.
From late ‘05 through the early gen 1 997 engines of ‘09, the IMS is the larger, non-serviceable type. The good news is they have a high degree of reliability for normal driving. The failures on these bearings comes with regular track duty.
Either way, you want frequent oil changes. At least every 3-4K or annually.
My ‘06 Cayman(same bearing) has just over 100k and oil analysis shows good numbers for wear. Having said that I know it may not be an IMS predictor that I can rely on, but it gives me some info on engine health.
MT2ndDoc, Sounds like you're home free for another 50k miles! I have family all over Southwestern OK, good to see a Porsche guy out there. Taking a road trip next month thru your neck of the woods, might have to stop and check out your 996!
