Suggestion

More an asthetic change rather than anything else from what I have heard and observed (I have only driven a Tiptronic twice on test drives) - but the Tip switches seem quite well designed and located for when giving it some beans.

In brief, I have a 996 C4S Tiptronic and I can't believe there is not a conversion kit to add paddles behind the wheel instead of using the wheel buttons (surely can't be hard to do).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know I asked this question about a year ago, but I remember getting a few people saying they were looking for this too and wondered if anyone had found/developed anything yet. In brief, I have a 996 C4S Tiptronic and I can't believe there is not a conversion kit to add paddles behind the wheel instead of using the wheel buttons (surely can't be hard to do). Anyone any ideas?

POST 3Original post

Why would you want a tiptronic? Have you tried driving the manual, it's a much better car. TJ

POST 4Original post

Ahemm... Read the original post TJ - he already HAS a tiptronic! Now you've insulted the poor chap's choice of car...

POST 6Original post

When I test drove a 997 tip (b4 I bought HD1) I was disappointed only to have buttons, so flappy paddles would be a huge improvement...the M3 CSL I drove had SMG flappy paddles and I loved 'em......

POST 7Original post

my old Fiat Stilo Arbarth had flappy paddles, very intuitive in terms of hands position on the wheel etc....

POST 8Original post

Oh dear Tim, you've admitted you owned a Fiat!!!!!! Although I must admit when I was looking for a shopping car the Stilo Abarth did make it to my list as it seemed great value for money.

POST 9Original post

I did yes , got a great deal on it at the time, brand new, £5k off list with every toy on it (made the shocking depreciation marginally easier). unfortunately the old adage Fix It Again Tomorrow was very true of this car...... it went beautifully when it went (which was generally about 60% of the time....) but shocking MPG and reliability. flappy paddle box was good when it worked and didn't flash up "Automatic gearbox failure. return to dealer slowly" when doing 80 on the motorway....

POST 10Original post

I did this conversion on a BMW with the steptronic, quite simple but nearly a £1000 (M3 SMG steering wheel airbag etc). and lets face it you don't really gain alot at the end of the day its still an Autobox. At the end of the day I didn't even use the paddles that often preferring to drive in auto mode. More an asthetic change rather than anything else from what I have heard and observed (I have only driven a Tiptronic twice on test drives) - but the Tip switches seem quite well designed and located for when giving it some beans.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The buttons are a BAD design fault IMO. They are hopeless when gripping the wheel and driving aggresively. Paddles are designed to be driven and used at the same time, i think the buttons are in completely the wrong place, to take your thumb off the wheel when going round a corner, or when you're holding on to the steering wheel whilst hard acceleration is wrong!

POST 12Original post

Interesting I didn't think they were 2 bad, if you go for the paddles do you know if they are the type that move with the wheel like BMW SMG or the type fixed to the steering column - Ferrari - which type do you think is better?
