Most people in CH have 2 sets of wheels, one set with summer tyres and one set with winter tyres and swop them over.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi guys,
was wondering if anyone has any experience of winter tyres, we are planning a 'snowball rally' in late feb early march with an audi S4, RS4 and my 996TT we are getting the chunnel and driving to the ring then onto meribel for a weeks snowboarding.
i will need a new set of rubber by late jan, any recommendations on a suitable tyre that could handle both of these????

Hi Shane,
as i live in a country where winter tyres are common place i think i can give some advice.
Winter tyres DO make a diffence when the temp has dropped below 7 degrees. Normal tyres below this temp loose their softness, become harder and the stop gripping.
Winter tyres are made from a softer compound and therefore keep soft and the levels of grip are not reduced.
Winter tyres also have a different tread pattern and insted of one large groove will have lots of little grooves which grip the surface better.
In short they are a must and some European countrys have laws in plce whereby if you are stopped and are not wearing wnter tyres you can be fined. You would be well advised to check the local laws relating to he coutries you hope to visit.
As for brand recoomendations, Porsche as usual have their own N tested approved winter tyres. Your local OPC should be able to advise you on this.

On our Merc family wagon we use Continental Winter contacts (i think) as they are rec´d by Mercedes and they work well to.
Dont buy so called dual season tyres are they are a compromise and dont work well in either season.
Most people in CH have 2 sets of wheels, one set with summer tyres and one set with winter tyres and swop them over.
If you are heading to a ski resort then dont even think about heading off without winter tyres as you´ll probably end up in trouble.
Maybe even consider taking some snow chains with you as well? they can be rented i think.
I would suggest winter tyres to anyone where the temp drops below 7 degress as they DO work and people should not just assume they are for snow.
Any more q`s let me know.
Really good post. I was also thinking about driving to a sky resort this year.
I'd absolutely agree about snow chains, it's quite frightening driving up the mountain at times and it can be so slippy, especially in a rear wheel drive car.
Definitely look at renting snow chains, but get them in the UK and check how to fit them, because a) it's difficult to get the right size and b) it's a sod trying to work out how to fit them when it's freezing and snowing heavily.
When it's snowing very badly the police in France will stop you going up the mountain unless you have snow chains on.

many thanks for that post, what i am think is that i will take a good set of tyres to the nurburgring and get them changed to winter tyres for driving to meribel.
might be a bit more expensive but cheaper than picking my car out of a ditch!!!!!
