I almost hesitate to say this, but I saw better results with the intake mod alone so it would be nice to know the details of what this flash does, advance timing, change fuel delivery, etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

<div>GIAC software Flash is now available.
It makes ~ 15 more HP with an EVOMs intake now available at and without the intake our flash makes a very healthy 8-10 hp! This file is completely remapped for not only more power but much better throttle response.

What is the compromise? None of these flash deals can do this without changing some other parameter. What did they change - mileage, fuel requirements, rpms, ???. Buying without understanding the compromise is a big no-no because you may not like what you are giving up for h.p that you may not really use or need.
for some reason I can't delete if I make a mistake?
In any case, I have had GIAC software in all my porsches (996TTX50 and my
Cayenne
TT). I don't have a problem flashing my cars because GIAC always test the software before the official release. I am not too technical but I believe you can see what the software does by looking at the dyno chart.
John (mooty) and I willbe doing itand we will let you know our thoughts
thanks
i would be interested in knowing how the throttle response increase with the GIAC
ECU
reprogram compares to the SC 'power button' option. Please update as soon as you guys get the programming finished.
I have heard through my sources that Garrett has had to tune this initial flash one way, but that subsequent flashes will take advantage of some other changes. I almost hesitate to say this, but I saw better results with the intake mod alone so it would be nice to know the details of what this flash does, advance timing, change fuel delivery, etc. Any gain is nice but I agree with Santa Fe the devil is in the details, plus I've heard that this flash isn't fully baked yet.
Hello, I would like to clarify a few
points
on this post.
'I have heard through my sources that Garrett has had to tune this initial flash one way'
I don't know who your source is but, we have had 2
Caymans
in house off and on for 3 months and have only released one flash version so far. This release has been well tested and track/dyno proven.
'but that subsequent flashes will take advantage of some other changes. '
None of the test cars ever left GIAC posession with a flash installed. You will see subsequent flashes with changes to match popular mods. And GIAC will release updates at about the same level as
Porsche
does for their DMEs as a customer service.
' I almost hesitate to say this, but I saw better results with the intake mod alone so it would be nice to know the details of what this flash does, advance timing, change fuel delivery, etc. '
What intake are you running? We saw a solid 4-6 WHP with the intake alone - 3 pulls stock, 3 pulls modded, like to like runs showed these gains. This was not the only one we tested.
Porsche
is usually not that far off on their hardware. 4-6 HP is a LOT! We dyno test a lot of parts.
On the 987/997 cars we generally modify the ignition timing, fueling and expected torque output - to match the new power. Any factory calibrator does it this way.
'Any gain is nice but I agree with Santa Fe the devil is in the details, plus I've heard that this flash isn't fully baked yet.'
Actually this software is very done. Your
DME
is
Bosch
part number: 0.261.208.300 - the same hardware as the 997. If you order a new
DME
it will be the same one whether it is a
Cayman
or a 997. It is the software flash that makes it match the engine option.
We have spent nearly three months developing the
Cayman
software. Furthermore, the 3.4L is very familiar to us - the
DME
program is nearly identical to the 3.6L 997 of which we were first in the world to offer software for. It was a world release, so the German's had no time advantage on the 997.
This new GAIC
Cayman
program is based off a 91/93 octane version of the Marcus Motorsports 997 3.6L (very similar to
Cayman
3.4L) program. That software took first place in Grand AM CUP last weekend. GIAC provides software for a number of professional race teams in the
Porsche
world and they are very critical about gains and reliability.
In this program, throttle response mainly comes from power increases at part/full throttle. So all normal/sport modes on the 987/997 will run better. Those factory modes affect the pedal map, the relationship between the pedal potentiometer (under your foot) and the E-GAS (throttle body on the motor). With the part throttle advance higher, most users will experience better fuel economy with our flashes while cruising.
On a side note about dynos: Like to like runs showed these gains. Be very careful about testing any newer 987/997. The factory software contains 4 different timing maps as well as 3 main full throttle fueling modes, mainly to prevent damage due to heat and octane changes. These various maps/fuel modes of the newer computers will cause power to fluctuate more than it did on the older simpler DMEs/ECUs. When comparing run to run - ambient temp, intake air temp, atmospheric pressure, and coolant temps must be consistent. Ideally, if possible, like to like runs are completed in the same day to help ensure that these conditions are controlled for. A QUALITY dyno testing center can make sure these conditions are met and that the results we have seen are reproduceable.
I can't wait till we get a supercharger on one of these cars! 8)
thanks,
Garrett Lim
PS: Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Garrett, thanks for the additional information. I'd still like to understand if there are compromises or trade-offs that are being made that could effect other areas of the engine. Is there a logical reason why
Porsche
failed to take full advantage of the hardware and software? I'm sure you are careful about revealing too much to your competition but the more light you can shed on where the additional h.p./torque comes from the better we
Cayman
owners will feel about purchasing modifications.
Heya Fred,
Thanks for letting folks know about it... Pretty good news for these cars. It reminds me of the 3.4L 996 gains and we've done so many of those. Speaking of SC's Garret, guess who got another 996 to do a blower on
?
FYI guys, in case you were wondering I've flashed close to 300 Porsches (996/997/996TT/GT2/GT3s) in about a year and not a SINGLE person has ever looked back whether they are track or street guys. There are plenty of real race cars/teams running the same software on 996/997s in Grand AM etc...
Garrett,
I sent you a message and look forward to your response.
Sharkster,
Sounds like I might need to send you one as well. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wink_smile.gif

has to make certain as a manufacturer providing warranties to its customers that the engines will run 'acceptably' under as many different environmental conditions as possible. The OEM
ECU
mapping basically has to be broad enough to take these diverse factors into consideration. Remapping the
ECU
may or may not offer improvements to any individual driver in his/her circumstances. An increase of 4-6HP may or may not be noticable to the driver. Unless flashing and reflashing theECU affects the warranty, it seems there isn't anypermanent downside to the proposition other than cost.

Correct which is why I like the fact that Garrett retains all of the factory knock supression and safety features. They are all in tact.../ As far as noticing better throttle response and 6hp to the wheels (10HP) you could argue that but if your lap times are slighly better then hey...

4-6whp or 10 or so hp?.....nope. sorry, but that just aint that great. ok, if you are gonna sweat 0.4 seconds at the track then...ok. but, for real world daily driving it is not going to be that noticable. In a turbo, chipping is a must. I gained between 30 to40 hp chipping and increasing the octane of the fuel. for 500 bucks it was a no brainer.
Sorry Garret but I just cant agree that 6 whp is that much....cmon, you gotta be kidding. If GIAC can increase throttle response considerably then that might be plus, but the horsepower addition is negligable imo.
bang for the buck....the desnork, even though not a randomized, double blind study (redeye..you'll get this)
its still the easiest way to get a little extra zoom zoom.
i am having my
cayman s
flashed this week (6/14th) with GIAC s/w by Autoscope in Dallas. what would you guys/gals like to know other than dyno before and after?
What are the design compromises? Does it require a different octane gas? Can it be seen by
Porsche
techs? Does it void the warranty? Does it stress the engine? What is the warranty provided by GIAC? Does it advance the timing? Does it change all four of the maps? Are you doing this for track performance or will you get a 'real world' improvement? Thanks and looking forward to your testing.
