I recently installed the short shifting kit upgrade from Alex and now I am looking for a gear knob upgrade as I feel like the original one is not optimal.

I also like the fact the coin can be changed for different design and colour.

I don't recall the standard shaft being longer than standard, but best to check so you get what you want.

It seems that the most recommended ones are BFI, ICT and the 997 shifter.

From my research BFI is the only decent one I find that makes it in leather, also you can change the coin to a gear pattern.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently installed the short shifting kit upgrade from Alex and now I am looking for a gear knob upgrade as I feel like the original one is not optimal. I want something that stays in keeping with the interior but has a better feel/weight and perhaps a bit shorter? Hopefully something that does not break the bank either! It seems that the most recommended ones are BFI, ICT and the 997 shifter. Looking for opinions/recommendation.
I think the best option is a 996 Tequipment shift knob - more weighty, looks right, feels good - only trouble is the fact that people seem to want silly money for them(!)
997 guy here lurking... I have been pondering getting a Function First shift knob as well. The usual ones doesn't feel that great in the hand imho and would probably go with the aluminium version with white painted numbers/layout.
They look nice and a lot lore affordable. Their product line os really cofnusing though. Not sure what would be best for a 996, not looking to track not looking to have it high
The reach is just an extension so it brings the knob up to the steering wheel. It screws onto one of their regular sticks. Rest are just normal length with various designs.
They're nicely weighted and fit perfectly. I bought a cheap gearstick from eBay just for the silver trim and leather gaiter.
I've also got a carbon trimmed GT style knob that I got covered from a chap on eBay for £80.
I have decided to go with the BFI shifter at the end. I like the the look of them better, with the perforated leather which will match my re-trimmed steering wheel. I also like the fact the coin can be changed for different design and colour.
I am getting my centre console painted as we speak to match my car. So when that comes back from the paint shop I will decide what to do with the shifter boot and the coin. I don't have the sliver boot ream on my car. I like the silver ream trim better when the centre console is black but not sure when it will be red so I will see.
I like the look of the ixi shifters, but wonder about the height. I am looking to reduce the height of the shift knob. Can you do that with an ixi set-up (standard, ignoring the extension)?
I am looking for something with the gearshift pattern on top and a non-metal knob would be more comfortable in extremes of heat. Teh ixi meets these points.
The Rennline shifter (via design 911) offers the height reduction, but only comes in alu form without the gear pattern.
Any feedback on the height of the ixi shifter would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
David
I'm offshore and my car is at fearnsport, I haven't been with it for a while. I'm sure if you email them (IXI) they'll give you some dimensions.
The reach was just an extension that screws onto a standard length shaft. I don't recall the standard shaft being longer than standard, but best to check so you get what you want.
It's a nice shifter, I was very happy with the product when received. My car is an ongoing project, so never used in anger. I should get it finished really!
From my research BFI is the only decent one I find that makes it in leather, also you can change the coin to a gear pattern.
Other option is the function first in delrin.
