I removed the stock amplifier and cd changer and used a kenwood 4 channel amp.

I recommend a search on stereos, oil and IMS before your second post.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello, This is my first thread here as I am a new owner of a porsche.(996 carrera 4 cabrio) The forum has been very helpful to me until now!
The first thing I need to upgrade is the audio-sound. I'm looking toward sat/ nav direction in order to have a nicer look in the car and some light as well. I am currently with the OEM version of a becker cd player and I am familiar with other threads about kenwood and pioneer 2 din option (even though I think the models that are referred in other threads are outdated) . I really like the OEM sat/ nav of newer models (997 , cayenne and cayman) but I don't know if they can be fitted in this model. Are there any suggestions ? And has anyone tried installing a newer OEM sat nav?
My car is a 2002 996 carrera 4 cabrio without the bose system.
Thank you in advance!
I believe the 2003 and up 996 Porsches may be compatible as the wiring went to fiber optics. Believe your car is NOT compatible with the oem nav systems.
At least that's what I found out when I researched and did my 03 C2 upgrade to an 04 oem nav system.
Plenty of good options though with back up camera, sat, nav, Bluetooth phone/music at a fraction of the price. that are much much better then oem. I have an alpine double din in my 02 couldn't be happier.
Make sure you get a good amp.
If you really want better sound though. Think about your exhaust much better investment
Anything can be done if you want to spend enough money. If you want to get the newest PCM unit (or even the one before that) from Porsche, you'll need to spend lots of money. Lots and lots of money. It would basically require a custom installation of all the components, wiring, fiber optic cables, etc. Even after all this, I believe it would have limited functionality.
Your best option is an aftermarket system.

Of course I have read about the oil, IMS etc. the reason of this thread is purely to find the best stereo solution without altering the car much
and keeping it as OEM possible without extra wiring. I have come across my search with a single din porsche nav which is designed for older models but is says up to 993 :

Does anyone has experience with this? I would love that single din with it's functions and I wouldn't lose the originality of the car !
Thank you

That's perfect for my 1984 911 3.2 that is NOT for our 996 cars. Trust me if you want to keep the originally of your car this is not for you. It's designed to blend in with the air cooled generation.
I know it's hard I was in you shoes many years ago. Lots of options my head was spinning but Trust me your over thinking this, it's not that complicated. All the resources you need to figure it out we have here many paved the way for us.
You get a Porsche double din kit
You move the climate control module down
Get a new trim for climate control
Get a new storage bin for lower console
Use that as phone holder and run charging/aux connection
Get a double din nav system
It's a Clean install
Upgrade amp
Here is my pic I had the complete install done at Best Buy - yeah Best Buy its that simple!
It was free install promotion with Alpine purchase.
Sorry not best picture lighting is horrible but tells the story
If you do not want to modify the car much but want to have all the features of a newer car go with the ipad mini and a Scosche FM ipod interface.
You retain your factory head unit, modify the $65 horse shoe in your car and your good to go. The Scosche charges the ipad and takes over an FM channel to supply sound. Your RDS on the radio displays the correct information as well as your center drivers display.
The above mod only requires you cut your horse shoe (65$) to replace, and the Scosche FM unit approx $150.
The first mod I did wat to replace my non-bose audio. I went single DIN kenwood, replaced all the speakers - 4" 3-ways in rear, 5 1/4" in the doors and 4" components up front. I removed the stock amplifier and cd changer and used a kenwood 4 channel amp. Also have an 8" tube subwoofer in the back.
Took alot of fiddling to get rid of the alternator whine and the AM/FM radio reception isnt as good as on the stock cdr-220, but quite an improvement overall.
I guess I should mention that after spending a grand upgrading my stereo system. I spend more time turning it off and listening to my PSE roar then I do listening to music
Just saying
It's not that I am not happy with the sound quality, most of the time I drive it without the sound turned on in order to enjoy the engine's sound. The thing is that I would love to have the functions that this porsche classic radio navigation system provides without too many changes.. I really don't believe it won't fit a 996 though
I am from Cyprus ( in the EU). I am going to investigate if it is possible without many interventions to replace it with the porsche classic radio navigation system and I am going to let you know!
Thank you all for your replies
