Fire Extinguisher Retrofit Issue...
Hey,
I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for. Here goes....
I saw a Cayman this weekend with the factory $145 FE option under the driver seat. It looks awesome! For you guys with it from factory:
Question? How hard does it look to install? Seat removal required?
Sorry about posting in the wrong area.
Thanks,
Larry
Larry,
I have the factory FE option on my 987 Boxster S, which I ordered during the car build. I poked my fingers under my drivers seat to determine how the FE is attached to the seat, and it's attached by two bolts. I then poked around under my passenger seat to see if there are two corresponding drilled and tapped points there, assuming that the seat undersides are the same on both the drivers and passenger seats. It doesn't appear that the passenger seat has the same drilled and tapped areas. However, I don't know if the passenger seat and driver seat undersides are the same anyway.
My guess is that your drivers seat bottom is already drilled and tapped for the FE, however, you may want to check with your local Porsche dealer service department and ask them to check the install instructions for the FE option if it were purchased from their parts department.
Brey-Krause (

) does make a FE mount that will fit your car, but my guess is that unless you already have a suitable fire extinguisher, going the B-K route will cost you more. Amazingly, of all the rather expensive options that Porsche offers, the factory FE option is a real bargain!
Cheers.
Larry,
Sorry, I just realized that I didn't answer all your questions. Yes, I believe you would need to remove your seat from the car to install the FE option, and probably the B-K version too.
Cheers.
The B-K FE setup protrudes significantly into the footwell area. I could live with but my wife would not. I finally mounted it behind the driver's seat, might not be an option for tall drivers.
