Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

so after 3,000+ miles my heater still smells when i turn it on. my dad told me it was because its never used and dust builds up. dont you think after 3months of driving my cayman the smell should go away? any ideas on how to get rid of it? use it more often?

POST 2Original post

Hey Sapple89, I've seen many others on the site with the same issue. It appears that in some cars there is some kind of cosmoline or something on the heater core. For most owners, a stern complaint to their dealership cleared it up. I think they spray something on the heater core to remedy the smell.

POST 3Original post

Here are some more threads that may contain your answer (I searched for 'smell'): Unpleasant odor from ac/heater My only complaint: Bad new car smell I've noticed a strange smell in my CS since Day 1 and can you smell that smell?.... Is smell of "warm oil" the signature of your Croc

POST 5Original post

I suspect it disappears faster the more the heater is used. I had the burning plastic smell which finally went away at around 2,000 miles. But that was with daily heater use during late fall and winter in Chicago. Take a trip up here to Chicago. You will have that stuff burned off in no time.

POST 6Original post

Bad news from Texas....been pretty cold here (sub 32 for a few days....no laughing from Chicago please!), and I know have ~5k on my 2007 with a lot of full bore heater use. Still stinks, albeit not quite as bad as day one. Clears up after a few minutes, but always comes back. Dallas dealer had never heard of it...glad to be here on the CC as y'all have GREAT info!
