Leading evidence: 'Adjust rear hatch, lubericated' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dealer seems reluctant' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust rear hatch, lubericated' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just picked up my car from having XM radio installed along with Ipod connection, while it was their I had them fix the "'clunking" noise, it's finally gone!!!

Suspected cause
The problem is the dealer seems reluctant to fix it, I would gladly pay the $90 to have it fixed and go away.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone Houston peeps who want it fixed but don't want to do it themselves, let me know.
I printed Rainer's fix it article
http://www.planet-9.com/reviews/sh...roduct=7&cat=6
and gave it to the porsche dealer's tech. He said he will Email porsche. I think if we have enough requests for the techs to Email porsche. Porsche will have to do something about it. So people lets do something. Lets do it today!!!!!!!!!!!! Special thank you for Rainer's fix it article.
I know I can fix it myself by following the article but why? This should not happen to a $70K car.

I have a friend who has been a mechanic at both Porsche dealers in town and now works for an independent. He came over this afternoon and did the "Rainer fix" in about 30 minutes. Weather is very nasty so I won't be testing it out for a few days. I asked him if he thought a dealer service department would be willing to do this. He said their only concern would be getting paid for it.
The skies cleared this afternoon and I took the car out for about a 30 mile trip. The clunk is all but gone. You still hear the thumps associated with a firm ride but the loud thunk you could hear and feel in your gut is gone. I'm amazed such a relatively easy and simple fix does so much good, I agree that Porsche needs to step up to the plate and duplicate this at the dealer level.
I spoke to my friend again last night and thanked him for fixing the clunk. He said he reckoned his shop would charge about 1 hour ($90-100) to do this fix. The dealers won't start doing this for free unless PCNA authorizes them to claim it under warranty. This can be a DIY, but not having the proper trim removal tools, I was too wimpy to try it myself. Anyone Houston peeps who want it fixed but don't want to do it themselves, let me know.
I am interested in finding a good indy shop to do some work for me, not sure if I want to pay the $ to fix the clunk yet or not. I am thinking I will wait a little longer to see if Porsche offers any news sometime kinda soon.
But if you want to drop me your friends name and shop (either here or in a PM) it would be appreciated.
I've been calling the shop by its nickname. They have an ad in this month's local PCA mag PorscheNaut, its full name is ProTechnik. My friend that works there is named Ronnie.
Resolved on the 2007? I don't have any trunk clunk problem on my 2006 nor do I know anyone personally who does.
A few posts on this site doesn't necessarily mean there's a widespread problem. If you're concerned, try a poll here to get a better, although not scientific, idea of the extent of the problem.
I have a new 07 a week old and I have the "clunk". The problem is the dealer seems reluctant to fix it, I would gladly pay the $90 to have it fixed and go away.
Just picked up my car from having XM radio installed along with Ipod connection, while it was their I had them fix the "'clunking" noise, it's finally gone!!! I can't understand why some of the dealers are addressing it and the factory's not, well I do know, $$.
boxman, I don't have the clunk to fix but it would be interesting to post the "fix" details from the repair ticket from your dealer for others. I've seen at least three different areas of suspected causes posted here.
Santa Fe, I reported "the fix" on another post as well.
Here's what they did:
Resupported counter weight in rear lid includes R&R rear deck lid trim 55901500 .2 DC#55900200001 55901599 1.3 A-time for R&R trim & resupporting weight. No L.O. for this in system.
Good luck to others getting this fixed! So far it has worked!
clunk is back
I had the clunk from my '07 Cayman S "fixed" by the dealer, but it seems to have returned. I don't know what the dealer did or did not do, but I had it there twice. I think I will have to fix it myself. From what I understand, there are two theories to fix this - One with deadening tape and one with o-rings, any idea as to which works better? Or should both be used?
I cannot understand how this problem does not occur with every car. Perhaps some drivers just don't notice or ride only on perfect roads?
jayf,
The clunk-producing weight is an "absorber", which is supposed to neutralize existing mechanical resonances, in our case vibrations of the rear hatch, by generating an exactly opposed resonance (same frequency and magnitude, but 180 degrees out-of-phase).
These devices are frequently found in vehicles and typically quite sophisticated in design in order to function properly. Therefore, I chose an approach that does NOT change the tuning frequency of the weight's suspension but rather just "stop" the weight at its excursion limits, i.e., stop it just before it starts to wobble and hit the metal.
I don't see how o-rings can accomplish this without undesirable side-effects (no pun intended Stevie  ), since they stiffen the suspension and thereby detune the absorber.
If you use the foam-strip method, make sure the foam does not rub against the edges of the cutout!! This would of course also detune the absorber.
Finally my dealer fixed the problem. Here is what in the invoice.

Wow the car is now solid like a rock.

Glad your dealer was able to fix your problem.
Be very happy that your dealer is only responsible for repairing your car and not for writing your biography. The outcome surely would have been less satisfying.
I was also fortunate in getting the dealer to address this problem:

I need to contact my dealer as well.
I can't believe Porsche hasn't issued a recall on this. The clunk adversely affects my ears everytime I go over a bump!
